Ok Dan and Ernie...or anybody else out there that has one. How do you like your DE muzzle brake compared to the Vais or Holland's QD style brake? I have the opportunity to rebarrel one of my XP 22-250's to something LARGER. Mike Crain is going to do the work and has a DE brake available for the task.

John, I have the Holland DE brake on my 6.5 WSM, 284 Winchester, and 308 Winchester. While I have no experience with the Vais, I cannot image a better brake than the Holland. If there is something better, I'd have to see it for myself. Recoil is almost non-existent with all three of these rounds making them a pleasure to shoot.

Kirby Allen built the 6.5 WSM, with a Broughton barrel. I am very impressed with this round. Kirby has also built me a 223, 308, and now is putting the finishing touches on a 284 Winchester. He does excellent work and I'm very satisfied with his service. The 6.5 WSM is pushing a 120 Nosler BT at 3050 fps. Works magic when you want to reach out and touch something.

Thanks for the reply, I thought that Kirby might have been the builder of your LRP's. Did you ever write an article on using that gun on a hunt? Is the 284 your older SSK gun? I went the other route on a WSM and had HS build me a 270 WSM, it definatley shoots the 130 gr BT's way out there also. By the way, if you are the Mark I think you are, I still have the black HS 308 you sold me a few years back and it is still super accurate. nmhunter

New Mexico Hunter, I have an article or two regarding those XPs that will appear in the upcoming HANDGUN HUNTER Magazine. You are correct that the 284 was put together orginally by SSK. Kirby has replaced this barrel with a longer Lija tube. I'm glad to hear the H-S in 308 is still shooting well for you but I'll have to admit, I'm sorry I ever sold it Have a great day--Mark

The DE brake is a partition style like the Holland but does not have the top ports. The partitions are also larger to provide more surface area for the released gases to push against and reduce recoil.

Is that the only muzzle brake you have used?

Me? No. I've shot handguns with porting, Holland, and DE. Never tried the Vias on a handgun though...not a big fan of radially ported brakes...if you shoot prone they will kick up a lot of dust.

I have not used the DE or the Holland but have heard from others that they work very well. I have used the Vais brake on a couple of 308's and they too work very well. Some say they are not as loud, but a brake is a brake, they are all loud. Most of my guns have the HS Precision brakes and they do their job also, but are proprietary only on barrels ordered from HS. One brake I do realy like is the score high brake, it is sold by score high in Alb NM. it is three sided ports and does not have ports on the bottom side of the brake, thus no dust cloud when shooting. nmhunter
