For personal defense i like 9mm semi-autos, Glock, Springfield Armory, S&W, Sig, etc. For snakes, a good walking stick would be just fine.

I'll go with that. 9mm, 40, 45 for self defense.
As for snakes, I've never felt threatened enough to shoot one. If I've got time to shoot it, I've got time to get out of it's way. I rarely let one pass without at least picking it up and admiring it though.

Yeah, i've only had 1 close call with a cotton mouth, and firearms weren't allowed.

Y'all must not have snakes like we do in S.C. For swamp fishing in the Santee I carry a .45 Bisley handloaded with Speer shot caps full of #8s. It's killer snake medicine out to about 10 yards. My cousin has the Taurus Judge and with the 410 it's lethal on snakes out past 15 yards and sometimes to 20! Of course the .45 Colt option is good too for the ocasional gar that gets too close...250 grain solids do a number on them!

I'm from SW Mississippi, Bro. It's common to have snakes on the back porch. We find timber rattler's, copperheads, eastern diamondbacks, and the occasional gator in the yard on grass cutting day. Most bodies of water bigger than a manhole cover have cottonmouths. I've never met one that I couldn't walk around, much less out run. If i've got the time to draw and pistola and aim at such a small target, I've got time to step aside and watch him crawl or swim away.
