Hi, I am looking to start handgun hunting soon. Before I go and buy a handgun for hunting purposes I am doing my research and found this site. I am currently in GA and plan to hunt hogs and deer. I also plan on hunting deer in WNY where the regs say handguns or shotgun slugs only. I would like to make up the range with the handgun if possible. I am currently debating between 44mag (revolver) and a single shot rifle cartridge. I plan to only shoot factory loads.

Hey Scott,

Welcome to the website and forum. It really doesn't matter what you choose as long as you're willing to practice enough with it to become proficient. With that said, I believe it's easier to to learn to shoot a single shot in a moderate cartridge like the 7x30 Waters than it is most .44 Mag. revolvers. A single shot will also give you the advantage of getting a .22 L.R. barrel for some inexpensive practice.

Here is a link to an article I wrote a number of years ago about getting started. I started with a Contender and have used them for 25 years but I do love a revolver too.

WELCOME to the board!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news. If you are a resident of GA it is not possible to hunt in NY with a handgun. NY will not reciprocate handgun permits with any other state. So you legally can not hunt here.

This states handgun laws sux.

Sorry, forgot to mention that I am still a NYS resident (active duty Navy) and I just recieved my pistol permit (just need to go to the court house in person to pick it up).

Gary, thanks for the link.

I grew up in Pike (Wyoming County). I try to get "home" once a year to hunt something. I just moved to Georgia from Washington (state) so hopefully I'll get some more time in the woods down here as well.

The Pike fair is great. I love to come up and see the tractor pulls. The hill out of Pike going north is a doosie. I was routed that way with a 100,000 pound concrete beam one time. Pulled that hill at a crawl.

Welcome to the forum I am with Gary a single shot is a great way to start because of the versatility. I have both single shot and revolver i have my preferred uses for both for longer distance out past 100yds i use the single shot encore with rifle cal. under 100yds and in the woods kind of stuff revolver 44mag SBH with ultradot scope for quick tageting or my SRH 454 with Burris 2-7 on it but one thing is for sure once you get started you will be hooked have not carred a long gun in the deer woods in two years. Hope this helps

Finally I register and then the site goes away. I thought that maybe it moved and nobody told the new guy.

You should see that hill in the winter. I've been down it on a sled before (in my younger years). Got towed up behind a car. You can make it half way through town if you keep it straight and upright! While the site was down I lost two injectors in the truck so my handgun money is now on hold. I'll keep looking for a good deal though.
