great to see the site back up!!!! \:D

how much crimp do i need for my 45 acp

i've added a new toy to the collection.

i found a Springfield Armory 1911a1 used

i got a good deal (i think) it's had some trigger and slide work done. the previous owner shot bullseye with it as i also plan to do.

i am loading:
200 g swc
4.2 g bullseye
@ abt 830 fps

thanks, john

G'day John
I shot .45 ACP for 30 years. I found using a taper crimp to be more important than amount of crimp. In general the .45 ACP headspaces on the case mouth so you don't want it crimped in too far. Mind you, theory is all well and good, but ultimately you try a whole lot of variations and find out what works in your gun, because it'll be different to everyone else's.

I shoot a WWII vintage GI Ithaca 1911, I load using Lee carbide dies and I found that my gun likes it when I set the seating die to where it just snugs the case up around the bullet. I havn't found any benefit in feeding, accuracy, or velocity by using a heavier crimp. By the way if any of you guys shoot old GI 1911s and need a new barrel but want to keep it GI, Cheaperthandirt.com has military surplus barrels for 42.99, supplies were limited so I bought two but the barrels are in excellent condition.
