Sorry to post a little off topic, but it's still hunting! My daughter got her small game license in June. Well the moons and 3 planets aligned today and we went hunting. Of course the best place to start is with charlies. I might know a little about finding a few and getting close to one. This afternoon was beautiful, 74*, light breeze, sunny, and the sweet smell of early fall in the air. We checked the lower pasture first, but it's has not been mowed yet. A short trip to the top side by the lime pile was next. The second cutting was taken off recently and the grass was not to tall. We stood in the corner of the long field and glassed for about 20 minutes. I laid eyes on one most of the way down, all of 250 yards. I told Katie that if we get back in the truck and creep along the woods road in 1st gear it will not scare him to much. We reached a small point in the road about 60 yards past the area where we had first sighted him. This was great for hiding the truck. I was able to set up a few 4X6's as a little rest 10 yards back from the truck and just hidden in the woodsline. We waited about 30 minutes before the charlie decided to resurface. When he came up Katie says "He's huge!!" As he fed along there was no clear shot. He stayed low to the ground and along a little depression that only showed the top of his back most of the time. I told Katie to be patient and track him with the scope. After about 10 minutes a few crows down the hedgerow started a rucous. The charlie ran back to the edge of his hole and stood up looking right at us. The break we needed!! "Are you on him Katie?"
"yup"
"Where are the crosshairs?"
"On his nose."
"OK, squeeze the trigger gently til the gun goes off."
BANG!!
The picture below is worth a few thousand words but, I can't type that much between now and midnight.
The reason Katie is holding her license is that most of the boys in school don't believe her that she is a good shot and hunts. So we got some proof.
