help,I have an ssk 8mm jdj barrel with a 3 ring tsob base / mount and a nikon 2.5-8 scope. after 25 - 30 rounds the scope starts to turn counter clock wise . I have tightened the ring screws to the point I think they might break.
Thanks,MIke

The best advice I can think of is this. Put a set of shims in your rings. You can buy a pair. They do make them, usually for scopes that are touching the barrel and need to be raised. I pounded out a piece of lead and cut it with a set of shears and put in a scope one time. If you do decide to make your own, use a material that will not absorb water and will not deteriorate. Hence the reason I was using lead. Good luck to you. And keep us informed. I am fixin’ to scope two pistols, this subject interests me.

A little rosin, like pitchers and gymnasts use, sprinkled on the bottom rings prior to setting the scope will do wonders for keeping it in place. You could try Burris Signature Zee rings, with the inserts, as they work very well but that's more money. I prefer aluminum rings as they stretch slightly when tightened, gripping better, and seldom leave marks either. I have also heard of contact cement being useful, just spread a little dab on the bottom rings and let dry before setting the scope. Good luck, Rod.

Self adhesive lables cut to fit the rings will work. Put the sticky side on the rings.

My brother had a rifle in 458 Win Mag. He always ran it hot. The scope would not stay put. He talked with an old gunsmith about holding it better. He said just sprinkle a little white flour in the bottom of the rings. You wouldn't think so but that did the trick.

I had a similar problem with the scope on my .375 H&H (rifle). I used a few drops of locktite bearing grade. Hasn't moved since.

I assume you're using SSK's vertically split rings, or the similar Leupold variety rather than some Chinese @#$%.
Tigger's suggestion of self adhesive tape will work well, and is also my suggestion. You shouldn't require a 4th ring with the 8mm JDJ, and I doubt if the Nikon has room for it. By the way, the screws can be tightened pretty tight with T'SOB rings.
My problem with using Burris Zee rings is that if you ever want to remove them from the base, they don't "spring back" and will likely scratch the entire length of the base when being removed and returned.

what tigger does is what i do.....n it works. just plain ol sticky back labels of some sort.
if ring interior surfaces are not smooth n even, you can lap them to true everything up to get more contact surface area for gripping also.

Just play old double-sided tape? Is there any particular brand you would recommend?

Not double sided tape, they are talking about the labels like you use in your computer printer for return address labels and such. Masking tape would serve the same purpose I expect. The idea is to create a bind, not bond, between the rings and tube. Like using batting gloves for better grip.

never used it in particular, but yes i'd think it would work. we have labels at work that are sticky on one side. i just cut to fit the ring halves n stick em in there.

You may need to ream your scope rings. If the rings are not fully contacting the scope, you will get scope movement with heavy recoiling calibers. This is a problem with just about every Ruger SRH ever made. If you have linear scratch marks on the sides of your scope where the ring halves meet, chances are the rings need reaming.

Clamp the rings on the base you intend to use, and turn the reamer with a slow even pull, slightly tightening the rings when the reamer becomes too easy to turn. You will be surprised what it takes to make full contact with the scope tube. I use DYMO label tape inside the ring halves for a no slip no scratch finish.

Ring reamers are made by both Clymer and Dave Manson, and are available through Midway and Brownells at around $60-$70 per copy.
