I love hunting boar. So far I`ve used the following calibers:
454...44mag...41mag...460S&W....353Casul...45 Colt. Right now a favorite for me is my FA 454 shooting Winchester`s 260gr Partition ammo or my Redhawk with a 300gr HC handload. What are some of the calibers and handguns that you guy`s have used to
take boar??

The only pistols, I know I am almost ashamed to admit it, I have shot a pig with are a 7-30 Waters and a 270 Win. The 7-30 worked beautifully and very effectively. She shot a 139 Hornady SST with 33.3 grains of H335. The 270 shot a 130 at 2700 FPS. She took 3 pigs out of 1 pack. They dropped like rocks.

I have not had an opportunity to hunt pigs yet. I would not hesitate to go after them with my 7-30 Waters. Never be ashamed of that 7-30 Waters TC Man! ;\)

I've used the .41 Mag., .44 Mag., .45 Colt, .454 Casull, .475 Linebaugh, .50 AE and .500 WE. I've used a mix of Ruger SBH's, Redhawks, S&W's, T/C's and FA 83's and 97's.
In the mis-spent days of my youth, I had occasion to take them on several continents with rifles too, including the .308 Win., 7 mm Rem. Mag., .300 Weatherby Mag.(long distance, in New Zealand), and .338 Win. Mag.
Except for long distance shooting, which I have no use for, nothing is really any better for hogs than a .44 Magnum revolver.

James,
I also love to hunt wild hogs. I've used, like many of you, the 41 Mag, 44 Mag, 45 Colt, and the 454 Casull in revolvers. As for a Contender the 309 JDJ, 375 Win, 375 JDJ, and the 45-70. All have worked just fine and I don't think the hogs have any preference for one over the other. I find myself picking either one of my 44 magnums or 454's along with my 309 or 375 JDJ most of time.

38 spc, 357 Mag, 41 mag, 7-30 Waters with handguns, Everything from a 22mag to a 45/70 with a rifle. Prolly killed more with a .223 than everthing else combined. I have an old BDL that stayed in my truck for killing vermin. If a pig showed himself within rifle range he was shot! Killed a bunch with catch dogs and a pocket knife. 10 mins from my front door I can be hunting pigs they have become a problem around here, not near as bad as they were a few years back but still trouble.

Can't speak for the other guys. I know Gary is pretty busy. Our deer season opens here in Texas this Saturday so I'm looking forward to sunrise Saturday.

Only one for me so far. This past september I got my first one with a FA Mod 83 475 Lingebaugh.

I did make a follow up shot on a Russian one time with a FA 454.

Hey James, glad to see another Boar Huntin fanatic. I've used 44 mags, 9 mm, 40 s.w, 357 sig, and on the rifle side used .223, 338 mag,( this is a very devastating round) AS you know, boars are one of the toughest critters out there. So they deserve to be hunted by the toughest hunters out there. Take care.

416 Rigby - 16" with Holland Brake. 350 barnes TSX over copius amounts (105gr)H4831sc. Zips out at 2350fps; kicks worse than Bill 'Superfoot' Wallace, and barks like a really big dog!! The flame at dusk is impressive too. Sort of reminds me of a small nuclear weapon! Heck, it even shoots inside of 2" at 100yds with a 2x Leupold.

I've only killed one and it was with a long gun in 458Lott, he went about 750# and his big head is on my wall, my wife complains about it weekly which is better than a couple years ago when it was daily. The only reason I used so much gun was that I was after aisian water buffalo on a private ranch and the pig was a bonus. The 458 was a bruiser it dropped the bull which was over 2000# and the pig with one shot using hornady 500gr soft points. ( sounds like an encore round to me, but then Bullelk would get jealous cause mine would be bigger)

Bullelk Hunter & Wapitirod,
Know about those big long guns. Used my Ruger 416 Rigby
bolt gun on a big buff. Could not imagine shooting that round
from a 16" barrel. Have a Contender carbine in 45-70 that kicked my rear end.
A 325lb boar is big...how much wall space does a 750lb boar take???? James

I'm trying, I'm not the most computer savvy guy in the world and for some reason when I posted my gun pics it went easy but last night I tried to post pics of the buff and boar but it didn't want to upload so my wife is going to give me a hand with it. The only bad thing is the only pics I have are of the shoulder mounts, when I went to take pics during the hunt my battery in my camera was dead, I now make sure to charge it before every hunt. The only thing that helped was my boss at the time went with me and used a cam corder and though not the best quality I watch it time to time to relive the hunt.

Though I've taken many boar, I just recently began to hunt them with a handgun. My first handgun hunt was filmed for an '08 episode of the Hunters, Inc TV show with Tony Pannkuk. On that hunt I used a .44 Magnum Taurus Raging Bull, shooting CorBon DPX. I now use a handload w/ a 320 grn Cast Performance bullet. Awesome bone-crushing power w/ incredible penetration! My new handgun is a T/C G2 Contender in .375 JDJ, sporting a Bushnell Elite handgun scope. It puts them down with no problem.

All the boar hunting up in northern ca has been dead for the whole last year due to drought, hopefully when it starts raining more, because we've been having light sprinkles once every 2 weeks the last month, more feral pigs will show up,and i can bring the big smith (500) out to "try it out" on some piggy's.

I have more guns than I need, but not nearly as many as I want...

375 JDJ is a serious caliber. Anything will fall like a rock if hit with this monster round. Even African elephants. Nice choice.

I'm a firm believer that there is a difference between "killing-power" and "stopping-power". Any animal that can potentially do harm to me, meets option 2. A .22 can kill a hog; stopping it is my goal. I've had firends cut up and one nearly died before getting evacuated. I used to hunt them with bow only and never carried a handgun for back up. That has all changed!

Being an avid shooter and handloader helped me come to the conclusion that handgun hunting is is the perfect combination of all of my interests. All of the things I love about firearms, and requiring a bow hunters skill. I love it!
