Congrats Bud, WTG.

Our season doesn't open till this Saturday, but I got a 4x4 last night coming home from the shooting range. Problem is I got it with the right front corner of my Chevy Blazer. NOPE not a good deal at all. I looked all over for the buck but couldn't find him. This morning bright and early the police phone wrings and a guy is telling me about a buck 3 1/2 miles west of town that got him buy a vehicle and has both back legs broken, and is trying to drag himself. I phoned the local conservation officer and told him about the situation, and he told me to go dispatch it. Buy the time I got out there it had crawled off into a vacant yard, and I dispatched with with a 200gr. CCI Hollow Point from my Kimber 1911 Duty Handgun. Nope not a good deal at all.

Another example of how a heavy caliber with a high Taylor Knockout Factor will still not do the job with a poorly placed hit! Just kidding. Hope your truck was not hurt too bad. Deer are solidly constructed animals, and for their size can do some extensive damage to vehicles.

Kyle, good job on the deer. The 35 Remington and its kin leave nothing on the table as hunting cartridges. I can safely reach .35 Rem. rifle ballistics in my .35 Rem. Rimmed Contender using AA-2520 and 200 gr R-P bullets. My .35 Rem XP-100 is right on the heels of my .358 Win. RPM Hunter. I am fighting with myself about ordering a .358 Win barrel for my Striker, but I am trying to hold out until I get a chance to test my Coyote 35/444 (358 JDJ) barrel that is on order. Long live the .35s Good shooting!

Nice... The 35 is still my go to gun... would sure like to use one on a bear. how about some numbers? spread, weight?..... since we started weighin' our deer we have been humored by other's claims, and it is also interesting to see how much the proportionate weight goes down toward the end of the rut

SWEET KYODE!!!!! Nice deer.

I was planning on using the XP in 35 Rem this year. Oh well it's clean and snuggled in the safe. Next year it will see some use.

Mainly broke the driving light out of the grille, busted a piece out of the grille and broke the tabs that hold the parking light / turn signal into the grille. I got it all patched back up tonight, well except for the driving light and I was eventually going to replace them anyway. I got an estimate today and it was not even as much as my deductable ($500.00) so I just decided to fix it for now as is.

Yep I am getting excited about Saturday, but if people don't stop hitting deer with vehicles (me included) there are going to be a lot less bucks come Saturday. Just 3 weeks ago last night I was called out to I-29 to dispatch a dandy 5x6 Buck that was hit in the back end buy a vehicle and was crawling down the center line of the southbound lane. Man that was a nice buck. Since that Monday I have had to deal with 11 Deer / Vehicle accidents (not including my own).

Any deer with a handgun is a true trophy. Nice shooting KYODE. I hope to kill my first deer with a handgun this season. I have two doe tags that need filling. First weekend of firearm season was too warm and the corn is still in where I'm hunting.

Keep posting the great pictures.

Nice Job Kyode! Can you give us any idea on bullet performance?
Was it DRT (dead right there)or did you have to track it some?
Don't you just love it when a plan comes together?

no tracking whatsoever....but i did have to finish him. the 180ssp does great n it is started at 2150+fps from this gun. at 200yrds i seem to have difficulty making a "perfect" shot though. i need to fine tune.

KYODE:

Given your initial velocity of 2,150 fps, what do you consider your maximum killing distance with your 35 Remington? Would 250 yards be asking too much of this cartridge with a Hornady 180 SSPB?

I haven't had time to play with my new 15" 357 Herrett barrel. One of the bullets I plan on shooting is the 180 SSPB. Hope to achieve a velocity of 2,000+ fps.

Leverman,

I have a 357 Herrett in a 10" barrel. I was getting 1850 using H4227 and the 180gr sspb so you should have no problem in in 15" tube getting over 2000 fps. Unfortunately that powder has been discontinued and the IMR stuff is definately not the same. I'm planning on trying IMR4198 when I shoot up the last of my 4227 loads. The 4198 shoots very well in my 30 Herrett and would yield higher velocities than the 4227 in that caliber. Hope it holds true in the 357.

Hey Gascheck,

Have you ever tried XMR 5744 from Accurate Powders? This is one powder I use alot and velocities look pretty good.

Also, I plan on loading bullets with and without a crimp. I know this makes a big difference with my 357 Maximum.

Finally, do you use a Magnum rifle or standard rifle primer? I have some data that recommends the use of Magnum primers.

i'd think you may get above 2000fps???...n maybe close to mine with that herret? let us know.
250yrds would really be stretchin it. just over 200 is about all i feel comfortable with. i think last yrs deer later "ranged" at like 208 er so yrds. i'd prefer under 250. out there yer gettin into holding over the deer n i'd prefer to stay "top of back" or "on hair". not really sure about the bullet at 250. does good at 200 so far...lol

Hey Kyle...dandy of a deer! Browsing the gn safe this afternoon trying to decide on what to use this year for our opening day. I unscoped the .35 Rem after last season but may need to find optics for it this year. It's a great cartridge for my first day hunting area.

I was playing around with Oehler's Ballistic Explorer program last week, and the Maximum Point Blank Range for a .35 Remington using the Hornady 200 gr Spire Point at 2,133 fps was 203.4 yards. This presumes a sight setting of +3" at 100 yards. The bullet will strike -2.69 at the PBR, and -10" at 250 yards. Unless you choose an unrealistic sight setting, it looks like 200 yards is about the practical maximum range. Just my two cents.

KYODE:

I should have time to begin load testing during the X-mas/New Years holiday. By then I'll have enough cash ponied up for a Bushnell Trophy 2x-6x pistol scope and two sets of Burris Signature rings.

The new 357 Herrett Bullberry barrel is an early Christmas present from the wife. I love it when she lets me buy a new toy to play with. Not sure what next years barrel should be.

Kind of leaning towards a 25-20 rifle barrel for shooting small game with cast leads. A buddy of mine already has two barrels in this cartridge. One from T/C and the other from OTT. He like the OTT barrel the best. The thing is death on squirrels with sub-sonic cast bullet loads. He can keep 5 shots under 1/2" at 50 yards and averages about 60 squirrel kills a season.

Well everyone keep shooting straight. If I am successful with my 357 Maximum this week I'll try and post some pictures. I need help in the technology department.

I've never tried 5744 before. Accurate powder availability in local stores has never been great. I'll have to look at the manuals a little closer for this one.

I played with regular and mag primers when I was using 4227 and felt there was little need for the mag. My loads chronoed very consistanly with CCI large rifle and no crimp but my notes don't indicate that I shot for groups with crimped loads. I do know that my factory barrel has an extremely long throat. It is not practical to get to the lands when seating the bullet out, but accuracy still is good.

Keep us posted on your load development.

I did some more fooling around with the ballistics program, and a sight setting of +4.5 at 100 yds will give you a PBR of 250 yds with a 200 gr SP at 2133 fps in the .35 Rem.. At 250 yards the energy is down to 885 ft lbs, which is plenty to kill a deer. My only concern would be whether the velocity would be sufficient for expansion, but with a .35 cal expansion is not as critical as one of the pip squeak calibers.

i don't think the 200gr sp would be NEAR as good of a choice as the 180gr ssp single shot bullet. i'd worry aboout expansion on the 200gr sp, unless really close.
200yrds is plenty far enough imo also. don't hurt to use a lil huntin skill to get a few yrds closer.....lol.

Kyle,

Sorry, but I do not agree. Based on my actual hunting experience, there is absolutely no problem with expansion of either the R-P or Sierra 200 RN Bullets at those velocities/ranges on a deer sized animal. The Hornady RN is significantly harder, and might cause some problems at longer ranges, but I do not know, as I only use that bullet in my .358 and 35 Whelen.

I use the 200 gr R-P RNCL almost exclusively in my .35 Remingtons, .35 Remington Rimmed and even in my .357 Maximums. Nothing wrong with the 180 SSP. I tried it, but the 200 RN just works better for me in my guns. The increased resistance of the heavier bullet gives me a more complete burn with AA-2520, which is my preferred powder in the 35s.

I only inserted the information about maximum PBR because of the comments earlier in the thread regarding distance and the .35 Rem. If I was intending to shoot at that range, I would be using a Striker in either .308 Win, or .300 WSM, rather than the .35 Remington.

I agree with your comments about sneaking up on the game. Although after just having returned from a Wyoming Antelope hunt, I am keenly aware there are certain situations where that is just not feasible. As a case in point, I took a doe with the .308 Striker at 25 yds. and a buck at 190 yds. with a .25 Bullberry (no rocks to hide behind). Go figure. Taking my .35 Rem. Rimmed next year. Regards.
