JDJ am going to start a Encore and was wondering if some of you had any input on

That's an easy one. Give Tammi a call at SSK, 740-264-0176. Ask her for reloading data for the .358-06 JDJ. If you ask her nice, she may not even charge you the dollar she does most folks. Have 2 of these myself, a Ruger M77 re-chambered from .35 Whelen, and a 18" ported Encore rifle barrel I picked up for next to nothing before eBay went wonky. They are my heavy hitters up here in the Pacific NW for elk and bear at rock throwin' distance. Won't share my favorite loads 'cause what works for me won't necessarily work in your guns. I developed my loads working up slowly from fire-forming to ass-kicking, but never exceeding max along the way. Once I hit pressure signs, I started backing off till I found the most accurate loads and then stuck with them.

Thunter, 358 win is one of my top barrels in an encore, its an ssk job that is very accurate with 49 gr of IMR 4895 shooting nosler 225 gr partitions, accubonds and discontinued bt's. I haven't killed any deer with it yet but large hogs hit the ground right away . If you dont reload it pretty much a waste of time and money and it would be better to go with the 35 whelen. Good luck with what ever you choose, rick

thanks for the info I am thinking about the 35 Whelen imp. mainly because I have a rifle built on a 98 FN action and love it run nosler 225 out at 2700+ and barns 200 triples out at 2900+ 25.5in barrel but a 15in barrel is a bit different. And I wil call SSK to see what the 358 06 jdj will do thanks for the help

I reload for the 350 Remington Magnum in a rifle. Ruger M77 Mark II. I can drive a 220 grain Speer FN at 2700 fps and cover 3 shots with a quarter every time. 250 grain Hornady's at 2450 to 2500 fps. Ouch these hurt. Accuracy ok. Best powder is IMR 4320 for the heavy loads with Ramshot TAC a close second.

My favorite light load is a Hornady 180 SSPB behind 48 grains of H4895. Runs about 2350 fps and will punch a 1/2 group at 100 yards. Good deer load without killing your self. This would make an excellent load for an Encore pistol in the 350 magnum.

I called TC about the same question. They recommend the 358 Win. It is marginally slower and uses considerable less powder. Hogdon’s website has reloading data for it. However, I don’t know anyone that had pistol data for it. As a general rule of thumb, you are going to loose about 300 fps when going from a 24 in barrel to a 15 in barrel.

The test gun for the 358 in my Hornady book is an Encore. It lists a 200 grain at 2600 fps. Hogdon has two other powders listed to do the same. That is in the same category as the 35 Whelen with a lot less kick. It is 100 fps slower than the 350 Rem. But as my Hornady book states, “In the field one probably could tell little effective difference between the two calibers.”

I will put any .308 based cartridge against the bigger boys when it comes to 15" and under handgun length barrels. You can get anywhere from 100 to 150 fps more with the 35 Whelen and such over the .358 Winchester, this is true. But at the expense of a LOT more powder, noise and muzzle flash. All that for about 1" of trajectory advantage @ 300 yards, not worth it IMO. You really need to step up to the 17" length range to get a real advantage from the '06 and larger cases. FWIW, Rod.

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

D'Keyman here again. Speaking of the devil, I just got my 35-06 JDJ barrel back from SSK today. They put a T'SOB base on it for me, and included a sheet of reloading data for it! Post a fax # and I'll fire you off a copy. Sorry guy's, my optical scanner is down or anyone who wants it could have had a copy. Keep checking this forum, will have my equipment up and running sometime soon.

I have a 17 in .358 Win. encore bull barrel I shoot as a pistol, been shooting 47.5 grs. of IMR 4895 with the 225 gr. Sierra SPBT., I use Fed 210 primers in my loads. I have killed 4 hogs and about 10 deer with this load, works very well for me. Nothing has gone more than about 25 or 30 yards after being hit with this load, all the shots were from 55 to 185 yards. Nobody else might not like this combination but it works good for me. Later Folks.

If you really like the 358 Win why not look at the 356 Winchester. Same cartridge....but with a rim. The extraction is more positive with the rim and I think (but I'm not positive) that you can still use 358 Win dies which are a bit less expensive. In a pistol lenght bbl I doubt you could get a better caliber for big game up to elk and moose. I took a moose in AK with my Contender in 358JDJ and it is not much differet then the 358 or the 356 Winchester.
