After burying my 3/4 ton FORD up to the front axle with BF Goodrich AT's in mud that's the consistency of quicksand, I'd like to know what people's preferences are for mud tires??? I had excellent performance from the BF AT's in the snow in MN, but here in NC the lugs get packed with mud and the tires spin. Thinking about getting some BF Mud-terrains, but curious what others might have on their hunting rigs.

I had BFG MT's on a 2000 Blazer and they did very well in the snow. Dumped that thing and got a F150 Super Crew. It has Goodyear RTS rubbers on it...and they SUCK!! The came on it four years ago...and at 5K per year I just can not wear them out. In the spring they will be about done and I'll be getting a set of Cooper STT's. Saw them last year on Bullelksniffer's truck and really liked them. He also had good things to say about them. I'll go either 33x12.50R17 or 285/70R17. Stock is 265/70R17. I have a friend that runs a major tire operation in PA so I'll hopefully get a pretty good deal on them.

Whatever tires you decide on, in extreme muddy/soft sand conditions, simply let out about 1/3 of the air in it. This spreads the weight of the vehicle onto a wider "footprint". Almost like snow shoes, same principle. Buy an inexpensive air compressor that plugs into your dash and re-inflate when you get back to the pavement.

Think you find an answer here; http://bb.bc4x4.com/showthread.php?t=121635&page=5In summer I drive with GoodYear MT/R's on my Wrangler YJ. But in winter the Michelin 4x4 Alpin (special snow tyre) is far better!

I have used both the Dunlop Mud Rover and the Pro-Comp Mud Terrain with excellent results on my 4WD vehicles. Both tires are reasonably quiet for mud grip tires. Whatever you buy, check out the noise rating. Unless 90% of your driving is in the mud, the noise generated by some of the more aggressive tread designs can be unbearable. Otherwise, get a good set (or 2) of tire chains for really bad conditions.

Having lived in the high desert in central oregon I dealt alot with sand, snow and ice, the best all around tire I found for my trucks which included a couple of broncos, 3 full size fords 2 tacomas, a tundra, a silverado and my 3/4 ton dodge were the wild country txr. I don't know if you can get them on the east coast as they are carried by a western chain (Les Shwab). I now live on the oregon coast and deal primarily with mud so I went to a more aggresive toyo tire (37/14.5/18)and so far I've had good luck with them off road and the on the few trips I've made in the snow and ice.
I won't be wronged. I won't be insulted. I won't be laid a-hand on. I don't do these things to other people, and I require the same from them. John Wayne-The Shootist

........the wild country txr. I don't know if you can get them on the east coast.... Excellent tire!! Dad had two sets on a '97GMC 1500. They wore great, excellent traction in bad conditions and the noise level was just fine. They can be had on the east coast but you have to look for them.

Being in the tire business, I would first ask, how often do you need to have an aggresive tread? Then there is the option of 2 sets of tires, one for spring summer early fall and one set for hunting season off road. Stick with the A/T's for most of your driving and then put on a true mud grip tire for aff road. Here it is your choice from Gumbo Mudderes, Super Swampers, Buckshots, etc.
I sell both Bridgestone/Firestone and Goodyear/Kelly in commercial tires. I run a Dueler At Revos in a LT285/75R16 on a 1/2 ton GMC. I run them year round. I just put a new set on last week when my Bridgestone rep looked at my tires and asked how many miles. I told him around 50,000. They were whooped out and still had another 20,000 miles in them. He Asked when the last time I had them rotated and balanced. I just laughed and said when I put them on, and then threw in Your suppose to do that? I just thought I asked the Tire Sants Bstone rep for another set. He just laughed and sent the tires in. Point being you can't beat a name brand set of AT tires.
I have a friend that runs the 285's in the Dueler MT's on his 3/4 ton GMC and they are awsome. Been through some stuff and they just keep cleaning. He runs those year round with normal balance and rotation and averages 50,000 miles out of a set. He also is running the BIG block gas burner so his truck is almost as heavy as a duramax engine truck.
