If I remember my data correctly, the 445 super mag is equivalent to a 454 Casull

444 Marlin ENCORE 15 in barrel

300 @ 1900 fps

45-70 GOV Contender super 16 barrel

300 @ 1600 fps

44 Mag in the Contender 14 barrel

300 @ 1400 fps with H110

All information is from the Hornady reloading book.

This might help as well

“The cartridge is a 44 Remington Magnum nearly 3/8 longer that its parent. In spite of the “445” in its name it uses the same .30 bullets and propels them nearly 200 fps faster than the 44 Rem Mag.”

I had a 12" 445 SM barrel that was rechambered from a 44. Very accurate. It had an OTT break. The break took the sting out of it. I never got around to the 300gr pills. I will assume you could get 1,600+ fps with a 300gr bullet. I shot the Remington 240gr SJHP. I could get 2,000 fps with H110. I did a little bullet testing in a wet solid packed snow bank. From 40 yards the bullets penetrated 20"-30". Here is what they looked like.

Patch
I have a 14" with no brake. I worked up loads with a Cast Performance 300 gr. WFNGC. I got velocities to 1754 fps with 28.0 grs. of W-296. Same load with Sierra 300's got to 1689 fps. I really liked the performance of the 300's. I didn't like shooting them, though.

Also worked up loads with Nosler and Sierra 250's to 1900 fps with 30.0 grs. W-296.

I tried some W-680. Loads were very accurate but they never achieved the same velocities listed above.

My goal was an elk load. I too, always thought of the 445 SM as a 454 equivalent.

Hope this helps.

Dan

Thanks for the replies.I just got the 445 barrel and made brass from 30-40 krag.I ordered new 445 brass should be here next week. Its a 14" tube and it does have some kick to it.The recoil is about the same as my Ruger 454,375 JDJ or maybe 375 win and 45-70 barrels ( its hard for me to tell).I kinda like the rush of the big bores anyway.I have read that w680 is about the best powder for 445 but out here in the country where I live it can't be found.I have been using h110 and aa1680 so far.

I worked up a load of 1680 and the 300gr Sierra JSP with my DW revolver. 32 grains was just at 1250 fps out of an 8" barrel. Not wide open but accurate and fun to shoot. I would imagine that the closed breach of the TC barrel and being 14" would add a few more feet per second.

I'm sure you know this but I'll throw it out there any way. Starline brass is made with large pistol primer pockets. Only takes a second to ream them to large rifle though. Also I believe Starline brass is a bit thicker than the 30-40 brass, so back off a little on those loads in the Starline brass.
