The post on the Taurus 45/410 got me thinking about back up guns so I figured I'd ask what your favorite is? I carry my 4 5/8" 475Linebaugh loaded with 425gr Cast performance bullets pushing out at 1250fps, I carry it anytime I'm in the woods whether I'm hunting or just spending time in the outdoors, our biggest hazards out here are black bears, cougars and of course psychopaths, I figure she'll handle any of them.

Not only has she dropped a charging pig. She also scored a 250 out of 250 on my CHL!

That's a good question Rod. Here in NY there is really no big threat as to walking in the woods. We do have more bears and coyotes than 20 years ago, but it's rare to come across one. I suppose I should carry something as Mr Murphy's laws are always there just waiting for a fool like me. \:\) I have been looking at the 4" barreled Redhawk in 45 Colt. A good stout load would take care of anything I needed it for. The carry restrictions in this state are terrible. The places I might need protection I can't carry legally. \:\( I do have a nice KP-89 in the gun safe. I traded into it 4 years ago. Didn't really want it but it came in the deal. The 2 boxes of ammo that came with it are still full. \:\)

If I'm hunting then it's my 4 3/4 FA 454 but it isn't always a backup gun - sometimes I hunt with it too. If I'm not hunting then I'm carrying a Kimber Tac. Pro II.

GP-100 6" for general purpose carry outside. If I need something bigger my SRH in .480 with 7-1/2" barrel does nicely, but would be neat to have a shorter barrel version. Gotta mind to pick up an EAA Witness Hunter 10mm soon for hi-cap backup. I often back up my .41 Mag Bisley when deer hunting with my Bisley in 22 Mag for rodents and gov't dogs. I've always got at least two of something whenever I go out to kill critters ;-)

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

thats kinda funny this is the first year some one in pa can carry a weapon during bow seasion but it can not be a legal hunting weapon ie only semi autos can be carryed so every time im hunting or fishing i have my H&K USP 40, but during the gun seasion i have a 44 superblack hawk but sence im packing a 460 this year i see no use for a back up even if i miss all 5 times with the gun i could beat any thing to death with that big ass club lol

I carry 3 a lot. Shot barrel SBH in 44 mag, H&R 2 inch 38 S&W 5 shot and a 2 inch H&R 10 shot 22. The H&Rs conceal well and the SBH rides good on the hip when walking or in the truck.

Super RedHawk Alaskan in .454 Casull, with Cor-Bon 335gr. Hardcast, it'll smash anything.

I have more guns than I need, but not nearly as many as I want...

For general purpose bumping around I carry a 4 5/8" RBH .357 Mag loaded with .38's (158 cast @ 850fps). I also load this gun with 180 Penn hardcast at about 1300fps. I also have a short barrled RBH in .41 Mag that's at nice cvarry gun with 210's at 1300fps.

Which reminds me...need to renew my carry permit!!

I got home on Monday Dan, but only for about 3 weeks. Then it's back in for 3 months. If it works out maybe we can hook up.

I use 3 different ones depending on the situation. My general bump gun is a .357 4" S&W 686 shooting 160gr cast swc at around 1000 fps. I like the weather resistance of stainless for a belt gun. I also use a Ruger P97 45 acp with 200 gr xtp at about 900fps. This one shoots great out of all proportion to what I paid for it and is my insurance against 2 leg preditors. Finally if I want a little more muscle I reach for my 7 1/2" Ruger redhawk (old model before ring mounts) with 240gr Penn hardcast at around 1100 fps. This combo is very comfortable to shoot. The bianchi holster I use carries high and tight behind my hip and I hardly know its there.

Depends on what I'm feeling like carrying. In the summer I mostly carry a Ruger SP101 .357 loaded half with snake shells and half with HP. But if I'm going very far north of the house a lot of times I carry a Ruqer Old Model Vaquero Sheriff's Model in .45 Colt loaded with Win Silvertips.

A couple of weeks ago I got a Smith Mountain Gun in .45 Colt that's going to be loaded with 255 grain Laser Cast SWC and I think that one's going to be seeing a lot of boonie time...

32 Beretta Tomcat or a H&K USP in 45ACP.
Two extremes for different applications.
