Don't know about in a handgun, but I've got a mod. 94 win. that has kill alot of deer. I have read that it is still one of the best selling rounds sold. I think it would be really cool to see what it would be like hot rodded up in a handgun. You would probably get more power out of it then my ol' lever rifle. (Just guessing of course)

Explain what "Al" is I'm to new to all these wildcat rounds and terms. Also what is cut, cutting a barrel for the Al round? Sorry rookie on all this rifle rounds out of pistols and revolvers.

It's Ackley Improved. Basically the round has the shoulder moved forward with a different angle than the standard case. This allows the case to hold more powder and give higher velocities. Cases are formed by firing a parent case to form the AI case.

I always thought a BFR in 375 JDJ would be fun!

Ackley Improved, I thought that's what that meant but didn't want to assume. I've read about the JDJ's from years ago. They seemed to be the hot thing to shoot 10 or 12years ago if I remember right. I'm sure they've been breathed on sence then and made even better.

Pab1, you have the AI like 95% right. The shoulder angle is increased to 40* and the case taper is almost taken out (straight walled) so it looks like the shoulder is moved ahead. The shoulder body junction has been moved ahead from the increased angle of the shoulder. This will increase case capacity for more powder and velocity. The actual neck shoulder junction is the same. (see pic) Thus you can load a standard cartridge in an AI chamber and it will head-space at the shoulder neck junction. Then just pull the trigger and fire form to AI.

The 223 AI is flanked by 2 standard 223's.

An 8" 30-30?
That is quite short.

Honestly, I don't think you'd see any advantage of AI over SAAMI spec with an 8" barrel revolver, unless you're looking for a bigger fireworks display ;-)

I'd like to get a .375 Winny BFR, JFTHOI.

Rod, too.

LOL

I guess the intended range and game would be the factors for me if I was considering such a play toy! But oh the possibilities.

Thanks Tig, your explanation was much better then mine! I recently picked up a .223AI and so far I am very impressed with it. I have only shot factory loads in it so far but it is very accurate. Can't wait to dial in a load for it.

I don’t have any reloading data on the 223AL, how much “better” is it than the 223?

I have not started loading this round yet so I can't say for sure. From what I have read you gain about 4% case capactiy allowing between 100-200 fps increase in velocity. Once I start working up loads I'll post the results.
