Hunters, I am interested in what type of hearing protection you use or recommend?
I am looking for an affordable protection that allows me to hear the critters coming in but blocks out the loud blast.
Any advise is appreciated.

I would be interested in this as well. My hearing is so bad that a moose could walk up behind me and I wouldn't hear it until he slobbered on my shoulder.

I've been using these from cabela's for 3 years and they work good. They'er afforadable, $69.99, and get the job done. I'm sure there's alot higher quality on the market but they come with a price.

The biggest problem I've found with any of these devices is that you loose the ability to determine which direction a sound is coming from. They also seem to pick up certain background frequencies more than I find acceptable. I've found the amplified whirr of the woods in springtime is nearly enough to drive me nuts. I prefer to just have non-electronic ear plugs on a string around my neck that I can stuff in when needed. Electronic muffs are great on the range though.

I do the same thing. My only problem is that when hunting close cover, any extra movement will typically send deer for parts unknown.

I have also been thinkinig of going electronic lately though...I'll be near a Cabela's next week so I'll look into those.

i wear a set of these when im hunting bow-gun & small game any time i love them it takes a while to tweek them for the amp in them but i get a set once a year cause with my like 10 years down the line i wount be able to find them so i slowly stock up on them lol

but when at the range i have a set of remington that are 34 bd and when im in a indoor range i use them with a set of ear plugs as well

I bought a set of electronic muffs from Cabelas, I believe Radian, intending to use them primarily for Spring turkey. They tend to frustrate me because I cannot pick up direction. There sure is no substitute for the ones God gave me.

This is a good topic.Iam in dicussion with my ear doctor right now she said that hearing enhancement can be bad for bad ears. justlike you guys have said that the analog one make all sound louder and it can be to loud.The ones that are less expensive are analog.the doctor told me get good hear enhancement/protection or wear 28db+ ear plugs.I work where there is alot of noises and have wore ear plugs everyday but am losing my hearing. because of bone vibrations noise is vibration and that bone behind your ear will transfer that vibration to your inner ear and cause hearing loss.I can tell you this whole hearing loss thing suck when you see people mouth moving and cant hear what is being said is the worst. If I had it to do over I would have bought and wore the best money could bye.

I second that, I've had mine for about 4 years and I love them. I've got the quad muffs which help with the directional issues some of the less expensive muffs have. I've used the cheaper electronic earmuffs and there is no comparison.

I would approach them with caution and test them thoroughly when you get them in hand and make sure they are going to be sensitive enough hear critters but pay special attention to how they are affected by wind. I had problems with the less expensive muffs getting "staticky" when in any wind. I would also make sure they are shutting down outside noise properly when your shooting, I've never had that problem but I've heard of guys that have. Cabelas has always been good about taking stuff back for me so if they don't live up to what you want you can always send them back.

That's the reason that I read most of the reviews on Cabela's website...They were more favorable for this model than they were for the Walkers Game Ears Quad Muffs...

From what I've seen none of the electronic types have the same level of protection as the top quality non-electronic earmuffs. When I was a lot younger, the only thing the Army issued was next to useless waxed earplugs. As a result I know all about seeing lips move and not understanding a damn word. If you want to keep yours, buy the best you can find and use them for range work, sighting in etc. They should all be labeled with the level of protection. Use the electronic type for hunting where you're only likely to fire a couple of shots.

Alternatively, do whatever you like and spend the rest of your days asking people to speak up.
