My name is Tony,Bought a contender frame and a 6.8spc barrel and put them together and got hooked really bad. I am setting up my 357maximum now for deer. I didn't mean to get hooked this much but I had never been able to shoot hand guns like this. I started reloading for them and I am having a blast. I look forward to making friends on here.

I'm Ron, but friends call me Wayland, I have handgun hunted off and on since I was 28 (I'm 39 in May), mostly with Ruger revolvers for whitetails here in SE Michigan. I recently sent my Super Blackhawk in to Gary Reeder to have him make me a 510 GNR conversion in anticipation of Bear season this coming fall. I have used my Encore in the past (had a 45-70 barrel I really liked), but really like the wheelguns and living in MI we have a rule for handguns below a certain geographical line - straight wall cartridges that have been commercially loaded in a revolver when hunting deer, hence the 45-70 (like the FA BFR). I still have my Encore frame and am currently narrowing down my next choice for new barrel (I'm thinking 6.5x55 with 140gr bullets) and always looking for advice on this choice.

Howdy. Name is Roy. I have been handgun hunting since 1977. I use anything with a short barrel. I hunt with everything from a encore to a Glock and wheelguns in between. Look forward to sharing info and learning from you gents. I know there are a few here that I post with on other forums. I should add that I rifle and bow hunt as well. reflex264

To Whitworth,

I'm hoping by July so I can get some serious shooting time in before bear/deer season. VERY excited - I had a chance to meet Gary when I was down with my family visiting the Grand Canyon. His shop is amazing and he, his wife and son were all what my grandad would have called "real good folk". As soon as I got back from my vacation in Feb., I sent him my SBH... now just biting my nails in anticipation.

Reflex - I have thought about hunting with my glock as well, but have always chose a wheel gun - how was it?

Reporting for roll call!

You guys (gender non-specific) have been really cool with my newbie posts, so I'll introduce myself in case anyone wonders who they're talking to.

My name is Mark. I live in Palominas, AZ approx. 1000 yards from Mexico. My only hunting experience is one squirrel with a 20 ga. At 51, I thought it was time to actually try some hunting. I thought I would try whitetails to start. I like shootin handguns and own a 1911 and a GP 100.

I bought a Savage .270 and started to learn whatever I could. It is my first
centerfire rifle, but it is really east to shoot. Work travel will interfere with deer season, so that's out.

I may move to Florida later this year, so I am interested in hunting wild pigs there. I want to get a Blackhawk for the boars, but until then I will practice with the GP.

Basically, I am looking for a new handgun for hunting and learning whatever I can. Watch out, I'm full of questions!

Both the 1911 and the GP100 will put a boar down with the right load. Fl has some great hunting as well.

If you like the way the GP100 handles you may wanna look at the SRH in 44 or 480 for a bigger bore as it is the same size as the GeeP. Nice to meet you ;-)

for deer and avg size hogs like was said the 45 or 357 will work and I have friends that will only hunt with a 270 including elk hunting. I have a friend that has used a Winchester Super Grade 270 for 30+ years and he regularly shoots Mule deer and Elk out to 400yds and beyond. Living that close to the border I'm surprised you don't get in some drug mule hunting

Hi Im Bob from Olympia, Washington. I love to sneak through our abundant forestlands in search of game. I mostly look for that elusive trophy blacktail or cougar. Im a rifle hunter. Since backsurgery in September thought pistol would help lighten the burden. You guys have inspired me to give it a try. Ive got a load now for my 10" Contender 30-30 with a Leupold 2x nice and compact and accurate. I shoot pistol matches at my club mostly revolvers in 44,10mm, and 357 when not hunting. I reload pistol and rifle. My wife Kris sews and quilts and feeds 3 or 4 dogs and me. I work at the local print shop. Do my own home maintenance and try not to buy too many guns. Life is good.

Howdy Bob, I'm also in the Northwest, just about due south of you in Tillamook OR. I've also been through the back surgery game 7x so I know how much fun it can be. The Contender in 30-30 will be a great Blacktail weapon but don't overlook your 44. I don't have to tell you in blacktail country most shots come under 100yds and often in thick cover where a revolver with iron sights or a red dot excel.

Hey Rod. Ive had plenty of young bucks within clubbing range but it just didnt seem sportsmanlike. Usually chase em off to get bigger.Trying for mature bucks only. Hope to take home the next cougar I encounter. I may try my hand at muley or whitetail in eastern part of the state. Sometimes I get tired of being soggy. One good thing about the pistol is I wont be dragging the deer 400 yds through the clearcut.

Hello, I'm Thad and I am new to handgun hunting. Been deer hunting with a rifle for several years but due to shoulder problems I'm now going to try it with a handgun. I just purchased a Contender in 7-30 Waters and I am looking forward to this deer season. I am disabled and have been in a wheel chair for almost 20 years. I am a full time taxidermist so if you are in Louisiana please look me up at Fins to Feathers Taxidermy. I am just a few miles south of Baton Rouge. My website is finstofeatherstaxidermy.com.

Hey all! I am Dan and live in southeast Idaho (Idaho Falls). I began handgun hunting in college while living in AZ with a Contender. Had barrels in .44 Mag, .357 Herrett, and 7 TCU. That didn't last long as my youthful whims drew me to other gun passions.

This year my youngest son (he's 17) and I have picked it up again. I am back at it with a Contender and currently have a Super 14 .44 Mag and 30-30 that I have just started to play with. My son just bought a 10" 25-35 barrel.

My name is Luke, I am a dealersales rep as well as the Hunting Pro Staff Coordinator for Lone Wolf Distributors. I am a bow hunter at heart; but my Glock 20SF is never far from my side. Even though I will never hang up my bows; I am getting more and more into handgun hunting. I hope to put an animal down with my 10mm this year!

My name is Tom. I'm new to the forum and joined roughly 48 hours before the big wind storm hit here in Virginia that knocked my power out for 11 days. Managed to post a little before it went down but have been silent since.

I've been hunting for eight years and handgun hunting for three. I was back woods still hunting with my .30-30 and ended up with a doe at 15 yards and my rifle out of reach (I know - I know - don't ask). I carry a GP100 with BB 180 grain cast core for my trail gun and dispatched the doe with it.

I was immediately hooked. I have since bought a Performance Center 629 for hunting and killed two deer with it (beginners luck). My .30-30 has been collecting dust since (rifle out of reach - destiny?).

I have allot to learn about hand gun hunting and really like this forum. I'm going to try and not be just a lurking slug. Before my power went out, I posted a picture of my longest kill-shot with a handgun (78 yrd heart shot) and was really encouraged with the friendly responses. Thanks for that! First handgun kill with GP100 on the bragging board.
