Hello my name is Jerry. I have hunted small game with a pistol on and off my whole life and just in the last 2 yrs started after bigger critters. Deer and Pig are on the agenda for this year with several places to hunt. Mainly use a SRH in 44 with 280gr swift a-frames. I also love to fish!!!!!

Hey y'all,

Another new kid here. I'm in southern Oregon.

I've never really wanted to rifle hunt. I was getting into archery but since getting my CCW all my time has been put into my snubbies (live and dry). And one day while punching paper and mourning my archery time, it hit me like a sledgehammer to the chest. I could use my S&W 66-8 for whitetail!!!

So as a greenhorn I've decided, for training purposes, to go after the most vile, vicious and deadly game in my area, the western gray squirrel.

I want to thank y'all ahead of time for putting up with my ignorant questions and learnin' me a thing or two.

One of the best things about this site is people are willing to share their knowledge without the arrogant attitude some people have on other sites. Everyone was a beginner at some point. Welcome to the site and let us know how the squirrel hunting goes.

Hello, my name is Joe and I live in Washington State. I’ve been hunting and shooting for well over 40 years now. During that time I have acquired several handguns (I have a real passion for revolvers), a couple of which I bought with the intent of handgun hunting, but somehow never took that leap and committed to handgun only. I blame that partially on the fact that I enjoy all types of hunting – small game and big game – and hunt with bow, muzzleloader, shotgun and modern rifle.

Anyway, reading all of your posts and articles, and seeing all the pictures has sure lit a fire under me. Who knows! For now I’ll do a lot of listening and apologize in advance for all the newbie questions that you all have probably answered a dozen times.
Thanks.

Greetings from Michigan...

Thank you all for such a helpful and active website. Despite having grown-up on the edge of Chicago...that is Crook...or excuse me...Cook County, Illinois...I have had opportunity to enjoy firearm hunting and various shooting sports for most of my years. Having four brothers and a father from the "old school" of WWII who began his days in southern Indiana was a plus. I started with a Remington Nylon 66...and yes my children have used it.

Over the years I have had a particular interest in revolvers of all types and this was my entrance into reloading almost 3 decades ago. The .45 Colt/S&W Schoefield are favorites. A cap and ball Ruger Old Army (a gift from my wife) was the gateway to the world of original black powder and as a family there have been many pounds of GOEX and long hours on the ranges in Friendship, Indiana and elsewhere.

I have many times considered handgun hunting however even in a hunting state like Michigan and in several gun clubs there were very few handgun hunters and most with a passing interest. After reading Big-Bore Revolvers I had more to work with and now plan on my first deer hunt....handgun style....this Fall.

BTW my career is in medical diagnostic imaging and therefore the name and picture of Wilhelm Roentgen who in 1895 discovered something called "x-rays" and started a whole new industry.

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Eph. 2:10

This looks like a good place to be. I haven't hunted with a handgun yet but I just traded into a Ruger 5.5" Super Blackhawk so it just seems natural to try and kill some meat with it. I'm in Eustis Florida so a trip to Bear Bridge Ranch will be in order shortly.

My name is Travis, I live in northern Colorado. I am new to handgun hunting and due to some bad stuff this year I am not hunting anything this fall but I will be hunting solely with a handgun next year. I have rifle hunted for years and then archery hunted the last 8 years or so, so handgun to me is the next natural challenge. I have hunted CO, WY, AZ, and NE. I won't hunt in colorado anymore due to the politics I don't want to support but next year it's back to turkey, deer, antelope and maybe elk in WY and NE.

I'm Eddie from the Pocono Mountains in PA. Grew up in NJ where it's shotgun, muzzleloader or bow allowed for hunting. Finally escaped to the free state of PA in 2001. I have always preferred handguns to long guns for both plinking or long range precision shooting. Much more satisfying hitting your intended target with a handgun than a rifle. I own my fair share of rifles, but they take a backseat to my handguns. Preferred cartridge is 45 Colt.

Expansion is fine, penetration is final.

This is Cessna from Northern New Mexico. I used to hunt a lot with a handgun in the 60's but got away from it. I've hunted several places in NA and Mexico with my rifles. After just reading an article by Mark Hampton in Safari Magazine I got real interested again. After I return from a hunting trip in a few weeks, I'm going to look into it further. Things have really changed since the 60's. Looking forward to learning some things, and maybe contribute some things. Thanks.

Welcome to the site Cessna. There are a lot of good folks here that will be happy to share information. Things have changed a lot in some ways but not so much in others. We do have far more options these days and bullet technology is awesome compared to the 60's.

I'm Willy from northern Michigan and have been bow hunting whitetails since I was 11. This year I'm going to use my new Redhawk 44mag in rife season. I am an avid pistol/rifle shooter but this is my first revolver capable of taking big game. I hand load and am enjoying the 44 which I'd sure hate to have to buy ammo for at today's prices. So while I don't have much to contribute, I am enjoying the site and everyone seems happy to be here.

Welcome KE1Scout! I have only been a part of this group for a few months but I have really enjoyed it. The people here are very helpful and many are very knowledgeable. I am a lot like you. I have been a bow hunter for many years. I have killed many with a muzzleloader and rifles but only started handgun hunting a few years ago. I have a Redhawk also and a couple of 357 mags. I have killed most of my handgun deer with my Redhawk. I think you have made a good choice in handguns.

I am sure you remember your first deer with a bow. That is how you will feel when you take your first deer with a handgun.

The day after Christmas this year I was hunting with my GP 100 when I saw three does working my way thru the woods. It took a few minutes for one of the deer to give me a shot. I later told my son that that gave me the biggest rush I had had in years.

I have killed several good bucks with my bow, muzzleloader and rifle but none of them made me feel that way.

Enjoy this new passion.

My name is Shaun, and I am a new hunter entirely. I have been reading what I can to get started, and looking to go out for my first time soon, as time permits. I am looking to start small with rabbits and coyotes as they are year round, no draw, and the AZ desert is only 20 minutes away! I figure it would be a good way to start and see what my 357 and 41 mag can really do before trying to tackle the bigger prizes.

Anyway, I am looking forward to my first successful hunt. Especially with my handguns.

Hello my name is Jerry, my nephews call me uncle CoCo hence the nickname. I've hunted small game with a 22 pistol and hope to move on up this year with a 41 mag possibly. The only other revolver I'm looking at is a Ruger single-seven in 327 Fed. Mag. for possible Turkey (in Missouri) and Coyote.

Great looking site here. I'm Mart from Alaska. Always loved revolvers, especially Ruger Bisleys. I am moving more toward being a handgun hunter every day. I have taken a deer and a cougar many years back with a 41 mag but am getting more serious about handgun hunting. I've enjoyed what I've seen so far on this site. Looks like a great bunch.

Hello
My name is Karl. I grew up with long guns and little exposure to pistols beyond a 45/410 contender I got some years ago for grouse on hiking and canoe trips. In effort to find something more exciting to hunt deer with then the mandatory shotgun and gain little more range, I got a 30-30 barrel this winter and have been developing a load with the Barnes flat tipped 150 grain TSX bullet. I have been trying some of the Barnes copper spitzer bullets but haven't found anything great yet. For fun and practice I got a 17 hmr barrel and had great fun with it in a recent prarie dog hunt with reliable head shots to 130 yards.

Hi Guys,

Well, lets see. I'm not one to talk about myself, but you won't know me if I don't. I live in Colorado, and have hunted for muley, elk, and bear since 1952. Yes, i'm an old fart who's 72, but who's counting? As you can tell by my name my preferred method of hunting is still hunting. It's what my dad taught me to do as a youngster, and i've stayed with it. It might not be the most effective way to hunt, but I find it rewarding, and enjoy it.
For the majority of my hunting i've used a Win 94 in 30-30 for my hunts. The last 5-6 years i've used a muzzleloader. Awhile back I had cancer removed from my cheek, and it left it very sensitive to recoil. I've always loved handguns, and shot CAS for many years using a couple of Colt 1860's. I've also carried a Taurus Tracker .44 mag with me when in the mountains for the just in case situations. I've never had to use it.
I've always been interested in handgun hunting, but never got around to trying it. I've never taken a shot over 100yds in all my years of hunting, and most were in the 50yd, or less range. Still hunting, and close shots go together. I've always used open sights in all guns, and will stick with that for handgun hunting. My vision stinks, and i've lost the sight in my right eye, but i'm stubborn about giving up open sights. I just get closer.

So, that's about where I am now. A new handgun hunter at 72, but pretty excited about it. I'm not sure if I should hunt with the Taurus, or get something bigger like a Redhawk, or maybe a 629. At my range it seems the 4" barrel on the the Taurus should work ok. It did ok for Elmer Keith, but I don't claim to be close to his talent.

Anyway, i'm glad to be here, and i'm sure i'll have a few questions now and then.

Hi 'still hunter'. l too have vision problems...The loss of a left eye long years ago left me with vision..Compounded by the problem of being left handed l had to learn stooting again due to the loss my dominant eye. l actually transitioned to rifle/shotgun on my right side quite well. But l stubbornly kept shooting handguns with my strong left hand...My most recent vision challenge is a cataract that has been forming on my good eye over the last few years...This is the biggest reason l have gone to a red dot on my hunting hadgun

Hello all,

I'm from SW Alabama and am a lifelong hunter and shooter. Around 2 years ago I decided to do something I've toyed with for years and buy a handgun capable of taking deer-sized game. A Glock 20 followed me home one day and just last year I took a nice 150 Whitetail with it.
As of 2 months ago I purchased a Super Blackhawk Hunter and am slowly making it into the gun I want it to be ... My everyday hunting firearm. I hunt virtually all weekend every weekend of season and haven't taken a rifle but maybe 3 hunts in 2 years. I consider myself a handgun hunter these days, so this must be the place for me.
I look forward to to being here, learning, and contributing.
