Hello everyone, just thought that I would join this handgun hunting forum to learn from some subject matter experts. I have a Magnum Research BFR in 480 Ruger/ 475 Linebaugh 7.5" on the way. I normally bowhunt, but have always been interested in hunting with a revolver. I predator hunt close to 2-3 days a month if I'm lucky. I am also a guide for whitetail, turkey and predators in South Central Kansas.

Thanks, Joel

Hello all, Steve here.
I'm a life long Alaskan, born and raised. I've been in and out of handgun hunting for about 12 years or so. I've just got myself a BFR in .475 Linebaugh that I'm going to try my luck out this year for Yukon Moose, heading out on the 31st. I've always liked the "packablity" of a handgun, and look forward to bagging meat for the freezer. Im trying out different bullets at the moment, Cast Performance and Performance Cast LBT bullets, I have two more bullets to try out. I might go with Performance Cast 400 grainers. Ill find out tomorrow or Monday. I've been a reader of this forum for about 7 years now and look forward to many more years.

Oh I dunno to be honest, I've been in and out of handgun hunting. I did join in 2005 btw, first post in 2009 lol.
For some reason my BFR in .475 Linebaugh/.480 Ruger doesn't seem to like any .475 Linebaugh ammo(handloads or factory). Though a scope would probably cure it. I'm finally getting used to the recoil this baby produces, and its getting fun to shoot. Anywho, I got one last bullet to test out, a Performance Cast 400 grainer. I got high hopes for it, as it has the biggest meplat i've seen for this caliber thus far. And the bullets look more uniform than the Cast Performance bullets I've tried.

Hello: I've been handgunning(hunting and target shooting)since the early 80's. I've migrated up through the .38/357, .41 mag and now mainly use the .44 mag with big hard cast GC bullets. I used to shoot iron sights and now have advanced to the scope on most of my hanguns(can't focus on the front sight any more as my arms arn't long enough). This is a great site.

Hi everyone, my name is Ron. I live in California but plan on moving to Oregon when I retire about six years from now. I work for a local government agency. My experience with firearms is rather limited. I had a .22 rifle when I was a kid but had to sell it while going to college. Just recently purchased a Smith & Wesson .22 revolver, it's great fun to shoot. I plan on eventually getting another revolver for coyote/bobcat and another for deer/wild boar.

Hi all, I,m Pete. I am a furniture designer from Upper Michigan. I have been hunting as long as I can remember. I walk on crutches and I have always hunted deer with a rifle. I have always been afraid to go deer hunting with a pistol per chance I might miss my mark and have to track one down through the woods. As you might guess not the most pleasant thing to do on crutches, especially through Michigan swamps in November. Any hoot even though this will be my first time hunting with a pistol, I do shoot a lot of rounds through my hanguns on a regular basis. I shoot a 22, 38 snub, 357, 40, 45, and 460 Rowland. Any advise you guys can give me will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

My name is Justin and I have been hunting in az for 15 years(I am 25). Recently I have hunted in ID, MT, and TX. I have been shooting handguns for a few years but only recently got into hunting with them. Shot my first deer with my new 454 in November and am already utterly addicted!

Hello to all; Kent here, have been a member of this site in the past, just checking back in.(Can't even remember what my old handle was, and forgot all of the log in stuff) Have hunted with old stuff 25-20/25-35/ 45-70 and the like. I've been doing the handgun thing on and off for 20 yrs and most recently took my Once-In-A-Lifetime North Dakota resident Elk with a 14" contender in 375JDJ it was quite literally a blast!!

My name is Kevin & I live in Pasadena, TX. I love to hunt & fish shoot. I have a lease in the Big Thicket in East Texas (Moss Hill) I go to mostly for wild hog hunting. I have grown to like hog hunting with my T/C Encore 375JDJ & 460 S&W more than deer hunting on my lease in South Texas (Freer). I can leave my house right after work & be at my Moss Hill lease in 1 1/2 hours & hunt for about 2 hours before dark sets in & be back home to watch the 10:00PM news but it is a 5 hour drive to my lease in South Texas. I grew up in Albany, Louisiana which is about half way between Baton Rouge & New Orleans, so being outdoors hunting & fishing was our way of life when I was younger. I am 43 years old & am married to a great woman tha lets me go hunting & fishing whenever I want to & also have a 20 year old son & a 19 year old daughter. I have passed on the outdoor lifestyle too both of them. My favorite gun is my T/C Encore & I have many calibers barrels for it. In 15" long pistol barrels I have a 375JDJ, 460 S&W, 22-250 & .223. In 26" heavy rifle barrels I have a 375JDJ, .223, 7mm Mag & .300 Win Mag. I've got a Kenner bay boat I use to fish the Galveston Bay complex but I haven't been able to use it for the past 3 years because of a battle with diverticulitis. I just had about 10" of my colon removed 2 weeks ago & I sure hope this does the trick because I am sick & tired of lying around the house on the couch in pain all of the time. Any one ever wants to know anything about how to combat diverticulitis just send me a PM as I have become somewhat of an expert on it in the past 3 years. Hope everyone has a great day. Kevin (Huntstomuch)

My name is Jim. My first handgun a s/w357 w/4in.bl. Carried it for awhile with my shotgun. Then while tracking a deer in 1977 my brother-in-law hit I saw a buck coming up the trail. Stopped and waited for a shot and never looked back. Then picked up a s/w44 and took deer with that, now also have a t/c in 35rem but waiting for a connection with it. So in all 30+yrs hunting w/handguns.

I believe God created the great outdoors and all therein for us to enjoy.

Hi, my name is Glenn. I have been getting a bit bored with traditional rifle hunting and made the choice to hunt with handguns only in 2010. Gary, I really appreciate you doing this forum, as it is a wealth of knowledge for a newbie like me. I have been hooked on my TC Encore Prohunter rifle and am considering an Encore for my hunting handgun. The big question is caliber. I am considering .30-30, 7mm-08, and 309JDJ. Any pointers or suggestions? I do reload, so that is a non issue for me...just another excuse for dies and such. Suggestions and comments on equipment would be appreciated.

Again, thanks for such a great forum!

Welcome to HH. All the calibers you mentioned are great choices. I would suggest one of the calibers you already have in the rifle barrels (unless belted mag). This way you already have everything you need. It really won't matter because you have now been hooked and there will be many more calibers in the future...LOL

Welcome Old Mud Puppy! I'll second what Kral said about going with a round you already shoot/load. Unless you have your heart set on a 309JDJ, in an Encore I would go with a .308 Win instead. The ballistics are similar and the Encore will easily handle .308 Win pressures. The 309JDJ round was created to get more performance out of Contenders. 308 Win ammo is readily available and there is no need to form brass. Just my 2 cents worth. Let us know what you get and how you like it!
