Howdy. The names Dave, I live in Utah and I've been fatally bitten buy the hand gun bug. After taking my fist bull elk last year with a 500 smith I cant see picking back up a rifle. It was so nice having both hands free during the hunt. No rifle slings falling off the shoulder was nice also. Even the look on the game wardens face as he asked "you shot it with that" It made my day. I love being so close you can smell your pray. This is hunting and im glad to have found a group who feel the same. Great mag! thanks Gary for your work and time.

My name is Scott. I live in Louisiana. I am trying it for the first time this year to try and get back some of the challege and excitement I miss bow hunting. It's something I've always wanted to do anyway. I have a Ruger SBH .44 mag. which by the way brings me to a question; with my rifle, I shoot a 139g bullet. Why do so many people recommend a 240g bullet for handgun hunting? Does the velocity make that much difference?

Welcome aboard Wizzard and nice to have you here! Your 44 mag doesn't have the velocity of a 7mm 139 bullet and the 240gr bullet at 1100 fps is just a great combination for deer. (It has to do with KO numbers instead of foot pounds)

Were in Louisiana are you located?

Hi, I am new to this site but have been hunting with bow and arrow, black powder, rifle, and lately pistol since 1974. I was paralyzed from the waist down in an automobile crash in 1988. Most of my hunting is from blinds. I am a woodworker and make everything from longbows and recurve bows to dinning room tables that sit 12 people. I have not been on any exotic trips or killed any huge beast but my passion in hunting, guns, and woodwork.

Hello all, I am Zac from Colorado. New to handgun hunting, only been addicted to hunting in general for about 5 years. Split my hunting seasons between Arkansas and Colorado. Currently working in aviation oversees after all the local jobs dried up. Making a little extra money out here, so I have been retooling and waiting for my return to the western world. Already bought a complete reloading setup that's waiting for me at home, casting my own lead is next on the list. Hope to take an elk with a handgun when I get back.

Hi,

New guy, Mitch, here from South-central Virginia. Just rekindling a past interest in handgun hunting. I use a 209x50 black powder rifle exclusively at the moment, so my main reason for being here is to learn from you all and not waste time in experimenting (yet!). I think I have already narrowed my first hunting handgun down to a medium length .44 or .454 revolver.

Enjoying the good natured group!

Thanks,

Mitch

Hey, Gang!
So new this is my first post and thought it best to ramble here so I dont clutter the info threads. *grin*

My name is Steve, I live and always have in N. IN. for more than (yikes) a half century now.

If it was legal here, I shot some sometime or another. My first love is traditional bowhunting but.....handguns came back into my hunting NEEDS this year......and I'll be danged if I didnt HAVE ONE.

So...HA. You guys gotta new member.

Ive taken whitetail with an Xp 35 Rem, Contender 44 mag, 35 Rem, a 29 Smith (first one was the first HOUR we could legally hunt with handguns in IN, 178lb 8 point)and a short session with a Colt Python 357.

So, I AM a newbie but not completely..let's call it my second go round.

If I recall now, I think Ive shot only 2 bucks,( the other was the biggest Ive ever shot with anything), and 5 does. Not a lot out of my 63 deer here but that is GOING TO CHANGE.

I'll be posting what I have in mind in the forums and why so if there is an interest... come say HI!

Thanks for putting up with me and GOD BLESS!

My name is Steve and I am a police sergeant in Georgia. I started handgun hunting about 6 years ago or so. I shot my 1st buck with a G2 T/C in .375JDJ from SSK. Since then, I have a 6.5JDJ barrel from SSK and a factory .44Mag tube. Unless it is with my Shiloh Sharps, I won't rifle hunt again.

I'm Roger, I have hunted all my life but mostly with long guns. I have used handguns mostly for target/defense carry but have taken an interest in handgun hunting. I'm thinking of buying a Ruger Super Redhawk 480. I hope to learn here!

I presently shoot a TC Encore 25-06 Rifle and am going to get a 15 in 25-06 Barrel (Fixed Income doesn't buy alot). Look forward to sharing stuff on this sight.. Hello, My name is Barry my friends call me bear. I just moved
up to northern Minn (Big Falls). I've been a long gun hunter
for many years. I've been interested in hand gunning, and while
researching budget, style, etc. I came upon this site. Wow, so
much to learn, so much to read. Lots of great info here. I'm
pretty much settled on .44 mag, and either S&W, or Ruger for my
first jump. I moved here to the woods (whitetails in my yard)
from the big city (minneapolis) and need some protection walking
and playing in the woods. (bear, lions, etc). That's the project i'm
not sure which gun to get. First day reading here, and now I have some
good advice.
Thanks to all the input. And thanks for having me here.

Welcome aboard Bear!! A 44 in either Ruger or S&W would be a great 1st handgun!

Howdy, My name is Jeff. I live in N E Texas. I have been hunting and fishing for around 40 years. I bought my first hangun (a Ruger single six)as a teen. Had to get my mom to purchase it for me because of being under age.In the early 80s I bought my first big gun. A Super Blackhawk in 44 mag. I realized the potential of this pistol one day shooting at head sized limestone rocks at 100 yds. So I started carring it on deer hunts. In 96 I saw an XP100R ad in a magazine and felt I needed one badly, LOL. I got one in 260 Rem because I felt it would be a good all around chambering. My freinds all laughed until they saw what it could do.IMPO it is every bit as lethal as a rifle if you have a prop to shoot from. Until a few years ago I did not know so many people are interrested in hangun hunting. It seems to have been around for many years and I didnt realize it. Elmer Keith for example.

Bob here in South Central Missouri. I shoot everything. Muzzle Loaders, Long Range Tactical Rifles, 2-Gun Combat, Defensive Handgun, Trap, Rimfire Bench Rest, Traditional Archery, and I Handgun Hunt for Deer. So far I have been hunting with a Contender. Current barrels are 6mm Bullberry Imp, 6.5 X 30 JDJ, and 35 Bullberry.

About forgot Retired DOD Civilian (35 Years). Police Chief for a while, now completely retired.

I have been looking in the direction of a Super Redhawk in 480 Ruger. That should be a dandy deer gun.

Glad to be on board.

Hi, John here from the southerntier of NY(Binghamton area). I'm a Correction Officer going on 5yrs now, until a few days ago my only experience with handguns has been with my duty weapon which is a Glock in .45GAP, and my personal carry gun which is a Glock 22 .40S&W. I came across this site and became interested in handgun hunting, long story short i bought a used Ruger SRH IN 454 CASULL 9.5in barrel. Havent had a chance to shoot it yet but cant wait to try it out.

Karl here in central Texas - have been handgun hunting since mid 1970's and still love the thrill of stalking whitetail with my 357. Just discovered this site today and look forward to reading about the experiences of others with the same interests. I still use my 357 magnum and also use a 1911 customized for the 45 Super.

I look forward to participating on here.

I'm Eric. I am new to hangun hunting , not to handguns. I live in Illinois, but grew up mostly in Ohio, and for a while in Montana, man do I miss Montana, but that is another story. My current handgun for hunting is a T/C Encore chambered in 460, with a 18" MGM barrel. I love to hunt, and always looking for others to hunt and share stories with. I used to guide Caribou hunts in Canada, and was a Taxidermist for 8 years. So I know a little. Thanks to everyone whom has replied to my questions.
Shoot straight and enjoy life.

Hi there my name is Willie. I am from Cape Town South Africa. New to handgun hunting. Always wanted to do it. Figure there is some cowboy in me. Must be all the Louis L'Amour novels I read.Started hunting when I was 9 with a 303. Moved to bowhunting a couple years back. But there is always that buck that stand at 80yards with no cover towards him. Took 2.5 years to get a licence for the 44SBH. Africa! Been at the range...June I take it on its first hunt. Bluewildebeest!

Hello everyone, I've been registered for a while but this is my first post. I'm from the Albany, NY area and have been hunting for quite a few years now. I always rifle hunted farmlands and surrounding areas. A few years back I decided I needed to start BIG WOODS hunting! Along with that, I decided it was time to get my first handgun, a Ruger SBH .44 magnum. Took it out last year as a companion to my rifle, but missed a deer. I don't even know if I'll be bringing a rifle with me this year! I am excited about the idea and am practicing as much as $$ will allow. I enjoy reading the forum so thanks for having me!
