The advantages are more X's with a larger field of view. I have a hard time looking through a scope on 8x held 14" away from my eye. I use rifle scopes on quite a few barrels, you have to learn a different stance for off-hand shooting with them but they work well. The disadvantage is you may get kissed in the forehead on occasion, and just plain can't use them on some applications (recoil). A brake will alleviate this problem on many, but not all of those. I use low power, or no power, pistol scopes on the barrels that must be held at arms reach, like 45/70, 375 Win, etc, so I can use both eyes open. There is a place for them, but not everywhere. Rod.
Rod, too.
Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

A LER or EER scope would be much better for that style of hunting than a rifle scope.

I do not have any experience with a 30-30 in a Contender but I have shot quite a few other calibers in both the Encore and the Contender. It seems to me that you might have a difficult time backing off far enough from a rifle scope on that setup especially since it is uncompensated.

Thanks everyone. This confirms my thoughts about it. The only reel use for the Rifle Scope would be LOOOOOOONG Range.

Mike, LR is the main reason for using rifle scopes besides group shooting at shorter distances. There is just no reason to use a rifle scope IMO in a lightweight/non-braked SP that primary usage is hunting and has the ability to be noticeable in terms of recoil.

With age and eye problems, it is becoming almost impossible for me to use the EER scopes. I'm using a 4-16 power on a 22 WRM (no recoil anyway), a 24 power Weaver on my 223 and a 24 power Weaver on my 22 BR (but the BR weighs in at 19 pounds). Getting ready to try one of the 24s on a plain-Jane-stock XP 7BR (after I learn to duck quick). I use these from the bench and from a rest in the 'hog fields, not off-hand.

I strongly encourage muzzle brakes when using rifle scopes and factory Contender's are some of lightest weight SP's= Potentially Dangerous, especially when you are using a capacity of the 30-30 or over.
