I was wondering if anyone new the longest measured shot with a revolver on a paper target and an animal? Also the longest group shot with a revolver on a paper target?

Having see the way some of the IHMSA folks shoot I'm betting it's a long ways.

I would have to try and find it again but I remember reading about a shot Elmer Keith took with his 44. I don't remember for sure but I think it was a mule deer and the shot was either 400 or 600 yds with open sights as best I can remember. Sorry I know thats kind of vague but it's been a while since I read about it. I do remember that the book said the shot was witnessed.

I read that to I think it was 600 yards. Using a fence post as rest. I've also heard 2 stories on the revolver, one said it was .357 and one said it was a .44 special with his famous hot loads. I've always wanted to read his books but never got around to getting them.

I dunno, but I did see Bob Munden hit a 6" balloon at 200 yards with a 2" snubby in .38 special, not once, but twice. Not impressive for distance or group, but damn impressive display of natural ability ;-)
Rod, too.

Now that guy can flat shoot. You ever see him shoot Quarter, nickel, and dime out of the air?
Ok sense no one knows the records with a revolver, how about the longest shot you have done with a Revolver with a scope and without scope.

In his defense the deer had been wounded by another hunter and he was trying to put it down if I remember right. There used to be an online article about Elmer Keiths long range shooting technique that was pretty good. I can't find it when I do a search on Google now though.

I did screw with my step dad pretty good one day at the range, he was shooting his 220swift bench gun at 200yds and I was playing with misc. revolvers. He left the bench for a minute so I took my 7.5 SBH and walked the shots out until I had the hold over figured and and after a reload I managed to put 3 out of six on paper, the look on his face when he settled back in and looked through his scope was priceless, the 44 holes stood out pretty good. lol

Are ya thinkin' that there may have been a little fragmentation augmentation involved? I hadn't thought of that, but it would make sense. Even so, I don't think I'd ring a 2x2 steel plate with my SP-101, but I will give it a try once the snow goes ;-)

Leasongs, How did you get a crow to sit still at 70 yards for a shot? The ones we have down here seem to have an uncanny ability to know when you are out to do them damage and will not let you get to even 100 yards before they cut loose and depart. Have only ever been able to down 3 so far (rifle only) and even those I figure must have been the most retarded ones that the rest didn't want hanging around!

Geo I run into the same thing here in Oregon, the buggers won't sit still for nothing, I pulled down on one that I ranged at 280yds with my 300 and before I could settle the rifle he was gone.

With iron sights, I shot a doe at 87 paces with a 41 Blackhawk sitting atop a 4 wheeler. With a scope, I shot a 9pt at about 125 yds with a .41 Bisley Hunter.

The longest shots i ever took with a hand gun was with my 41mag BH with a 4&5/8" barrel. It was at a three foot Cypress stump at 200yds. I shoot it pretty regular, at least twice a week. There is a Live Oak leaning at a 45deg. angle that makes a good rest. I can keep all 6 in an 8" paper plate at 100yds off-hand. It isn't a tight group, but it would be one real dead anything. Using 210gr XTPs' over 21.5gr of H110 it is real accurate. Longest kill with it was a big doe at 80-85yds.

I forgot to tell you about my head shot on a ground squirrel 20 yards with a Beretta model 21A 2" auto one handed sitting in the drivers seat of a CJ5. (Back in my younger wilder days)If anyone has tried to use the sights on those things will understand what a fine shot that was.

My best shot with a revolver so far is a charlie at 87 yards with the 480 Ruger and a 4X scope. Best shot on a deer was with the 357 Max at 76 yards with open sights.

55 gal drum @ 100Yds with NAA 22 Mag (Note: Hit it 5 out of 5 shots)
Shot a squirl with a 6" Model 35 S&W best guess it was 75 yds off a rest.
With the T/C 154yds on a 5 point out of a shooting house (It was a 30/30 14").
When I had my old HS Precision XP-100 7/08 I shot a tweety bird off a post @ 200yds (Best guess) Nutin but a poof!
Best advice ever -- If you miss thumb cock and touch off another one.
If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

I had the oppertunity about 10 years ago when my eyes weren't quite so old to mess with a couple rifle shooters at my local range. I had been there for a while before they arrived and had been shooting my iron sighted 44 redhawk off a padded rest on a concrete bench. The range has a set of 3 steel plates hanging on chains at a lasered distance of 296 yards. I had been experimenting with holding my front sight higher in my rear sight. The ruger has an orange plastic insert in the front sight. I discovered that if I held the bottom of the plastic insert even with the top of the rear sight and held on the crossbar the chains were attached to that it put me right on elevation to hit the 18" plate at that 296 yard distance. Now it took me a box of shells to figure this out before the rifle shooters arrived. I then took a break to shoot some 45acp from the 25 yard range and was there when the rifle shooters arrived. One was shooting a 22-250 the other a 223. They sighted there rifles at 100 yards and then started shooting at the steel plates and hitting the plates about 50 percent of the time. I finished with the 45acp and returned to the bench an pulled the 44 back out. One of the the rifle shooters started to give me the business when he asked what I was shooting at. He and his buddy scoffed at the possibility of my hitting those plates. Well I loaded up 6 rounds drew down on the sight hold I had figured out and proceeded to ring steel 5 out the 6 shots. I calmly packed up my gun and quit for the day and left them shaking there heads. Don't you just love it when a plan comes together!

Hi All, My longest shot with a revolver was a clean kill on a doe with my ole favorite 41 mag Redhawk with a propoint was 260 yds , 210 xtp bullet ,small hole in and small hole out , and with an Encore was this past deer season 320 ish 375 H&H 250 gr 2 deer dead same spot ,couple hours apart, same deal in and out both ran about 25 yds before pileing up , no meat damage , you got to love big , slow moving bullets . And back in the 80s many groundhogs fell at over 400 yards to my Contender 223 with a Burris 7x , the most powerful scope of the day . I might add I shoot a lot at a good range that I can shoot at 300 yards , no guessing at tragectory , pity the poor fool who has to go by the tables in the reloading manuals !
