Haven't had this long, but I love it. Really starting to get the feel for it. People I've talked to down here have given me mixed feelings about hunting with it. What's the opinion here of hunting with a .357 with a 6" barrel? Thanks.

the 357 is a fun gun to shoot but hunting is different
you have to pick your shots and limit your range.
and spend a lot of range time.

If you are looking for a revolver I would recommend a Ruger Blackhawk, Super Blackhawk, or Redhawk in .41 Mag, .44 Mag, .45 Colt, .480 Ruger or .454 Casull depending on which gun you choose. What will you be hunting and what type of terrain will you be in most of the time?

i would have to go along with pab1 but i dont know about the
480 or 454 i have not shot them the 44 would be a good bet.

I could not have put it any better if I tried. I asked the same question when I was looking for a revolver and that was pretty much the answer I got. Pabs was just more precise.

I agree with PAB1 as well. You are really limiting yourself with the GP100 .357,

Welcome GlenJ. The .357 Mag will kill within it's limits. I killed a blackie a few years back with my GP-100 6"er. I wanted to use the bow but he wouldn't cooperate, and time was running out so I drew my back-up and took him at about 15 yards out, from 15' up in a tree. Right through the boiler room so he didn't go very far. I wouldn't push it beyond 40 or so with the .357 on light skinned critters and less on pigs and such, but I also have a .41 and .480 for the hard work. If you could only have one I would suggest the good ole .44 in a Ruger Bisley Hunter or Super Redhawk as they are optic ready should you want a scope and built to last several lifetimes. JMHO, Rod.

As suggested before, hunting with a 357 is usually a short range proposition. When I take my GP100 out in the woods, I know that I will not take a shot at a distance greater than 50 yards...Probably less, even though I have practiced with open sites out to 50. Archery range is more like it...Bullet placement is paramount with the 357.

That being said, my main whitetail handgun as of right now is my Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunter in 44 Mag. It's a dandy to shoot and more accurate than I am.

I have a G2 Contender in 7-30 Waters on order so that will probably be my hunting handgun for next whitetail season...

I'm going to add a question to this forum .. I have a 6" .357 GP100. Have had it for years. I was thinking of putting a scope on it this summer. Probably a red dot of some sort. What kind of a mount do I need and how does it attach? I assume it mounts in the rear sight mounting holes, but that is just my guess.

i dont have a gp100 but that is the way it is on my redhawk.

To drill or not to drill, that is the..... B-Square makes a rail that attaches where the front and rear sight would be removed from, benifit is no drill and much flexibility to scope position. Jack Weigand makes a base that uses the rear sight mount and a couple of holes that you mest drill and tap, benifit is small size. Both can be seen on MidwayUSA.com.

If I were to scope my 6" GP100, I would definitely have it drilled and tapped for the Weigand scope rail. I'd take Jack's products anyday over a B-Square mount. A simple D&T can be accomplished by any competent gunsmith. If you choose to remove the scope, you can just fill the holes using miniscrews that are a proper fit and fit flush with the frame.

I have a GP100 and love to shoot it. I don't use it to hunt with though. I use my S&W 629 as my primary hunting handgun.



I think the grips make this gun. And I don't just mean the looks. They are very practical and comfortable. The wood wraps completely around the grip frame.

I have harvested many deer with this rig.
