Well, I did it my first bolt gun. It's a 14.5" .223 Rem XP-100. Hmmmmm now what caliber should I get it rebarreled to..? I want to use it for bear, deer, and elk.

350 Rem Mag Encoredude. No such thing as too much gun!
Nice looking piece. Much nicer than the old brown XP I had with a 10" barrel in 221 15 yrs ago!.

i like it! i really NEED a bolt gun also.
i'd leave it as a small .223 size bolt head, and go with a 6mm bore.

can ya change em over to larger bolt head, and is it feasable to do?

Kentucky….no place like home.

Encoredude,

You can get a gunsmith to open it up to a larger bolt face or you might stumble on a bolt for sale. But, it that is what you want, it might be better to find an XP that originally had that .473 bolt face. Once you achieve that, by modification or trading, you could have any wildcat or factory cartridge built with the same base as the 30-'06. I remember a guy that had his 7 BR recambered to .284 Win. He used it for Handgun Silhouette at rifle ranges. Of course, now you have lost the capability to use the .223 case family. IMHO, if you build a heavy thumper you will NEED to get a different grip. That factory grip is ok with a 221, 223 or 7 BR but, with larger cartridges, it hammers the top of your hand.

Congratulations on the XP. Does that make you the XEncoreDude?

I notice that with my xp that has an HS stock. It kind of rubs the top of my hand in the web. It's only a223 so I'm sure something bigger would be worse.
XEncoredude, I'd leave the bolt face alone and go with a 17 or something. Then find another with the larger bolt face for another caliber One can never have too many xps

I have 3 XP's wit the H-S Stock and love them. I have had to always take a dremel tool and open up the area where the large part of my thumb knucle area rubbed on the stock. Once done it fits perfect for my hand. That said my next stock will likely be a McMillan, since Greg won't work on the H-S anymore (Long story).
