Hi Kyode. I need a big favor. When you posted that Aimpoint on "Specialty Pistols" for me, you did such a good job,... well I have two adds I need posted there. Both are in the classifides on this sight. Under "Misc for sale", I have one that reads 45-70 brass for trade. Could you put that in the "trades" section of the SP forum? And I also have one under "barrels" here, "7mm TCU, 16.25"...". If you could find it in your big old Kentucky heart to post that in the "for sale" part of the SP forum, I'd be ever so thankful. I hope you noticed I stayed out of the "crying towel" thing. That's 'cause I'm your friend!!! And friends help each other right....? Besides, you did such a good job the 1st time. Hopefully someday it will except my browser. I can still reply, just can't create new posts. Wierd.
On another note, I'm still scratching my head over your Chronograph results with factory 30-30 ammo vs. mine. Now you've got me questioning my chronograph. Going to have to try some known quantity ammo in another caliber.
Thanks, Vance.

lord have mercy vance!......you're killin me! workin me to death, you are!
hehe, why sure i'll get on it right now. what are friends fer right?

the factory ammo i shot over my chrony was winchester 30-30 150gr hollow points.....silver box/red letters, i think. they were just over 2200fps, i'd have to relook it up, but i think 2230fps average for 5.

Thanks a bunch Kyode. I need to buy you dinner the next time you're in town. Prime rib anywhere in the greater Kenai / Soldotna metroplex!
as far as the 30-30 goes, I was very disapointed in my #s. My first thought was I could probably do this with a 357 mag out of a 15" tube!
I was getting 1838 avg out of a fresh box of Rem. Corelock 150s. Got 1742 out of 170s. Both were consistent, & the difference between the two bullet weights is about what I would expect, but your #s sound more realistic. I can't think of anything in the gun that would cause that kind of velocity loss, so now I'm starting to doubt my chronograph.
Thanks again!

well...now you're gonna have to buy a box of 150gr hp winchesters to satisfy both our curiosities.

Well Vance I knew I had chronographed some .30-30 Factory Loads in a Super 14 SS .30-30 Winchester Barrel I used to have. The results are as follows :

150gr. Remington Core-Lokt Soft Point = 2171 FPS

170gr. Federal "Hi-Shok" Soft Point = 1992 FPS

Both of these loads are Factory Ammo, and the velocities are the average of 5 shots across the chronograph.

I also shot some Commercial Reloads that a local Dealer loaded (the reason I know what the load was), and they consisted of 125gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips loaded over 35.0grs. of AA #2230 (this load is one grain over AA's published MAX but seemed OK in my barrel) with an overall loaded cartride length of 2.840" and averaged 2395 FPS over the Chronograph for 5 shots. Accuracy with this load averaged exactly 1" for 5 shots at 100 yards from the bench.

Larry

PS, Vance I too can reply to posts over at the SP Board, but most of the time can not start a new topic. I have E-Mailed Mike on a couple occasions and he can't figure out what is wrong either.

Yer right Kyode, it should be at David's today.
Larry, your loads are right there with Kyodes, which really leaves me wondering. My barrel is 15" & my speeds were over 300fps under yours with the same ammo.
Tonight I shot 3 of my bows across it. All of them gave suprisingly low readings, although I had never checked them before, so I have no #s to compare to.
Hmmmm.... I think it may be time to send the chronograph off to the manafacture for a check up. Gosh, it's not but 20 yrs old. Never been shot either guys
By the way Larry, someone there told me I needed a newer browser, but I can use any other sight I've found, so I'm not sure what the problem is. Oh well, this is home anyway.
Thanks for the input.

Na Gman, I am not so sure that is good advice. When my buddy shot mine it was DEAD. Yep a One Shot Kill. However Shooters Chrony has a replacement policy and it didn't cost too much to get it replaced with a new updated version (with the remote readout).

Try moving the screens further away from the gun muzzle. I have one of the first chronographs made and if you are too close the muzzle blast will fool the first screen and trip it too soon giving low velocities.
Just a thought.

Radio Tech,
Do you think one should be further than 15 feet with a 30-06 class ported specialty handgun?

I think you have to experiment, especially with the ported barrel. Try different spacing and you will find out where the readings become quite different, up or down. I found out when I set up too close, less than 6 feet to the first screen.
Kyode's 15 feet is further than I set up but should be plenty of space to prevent the muzzle blast from tripping the screens.

I had the same problem with my old Shooters Chrony. If I set up too close to the muzzle I would get erratic readings. The worst was with a .300 Win Mag Rifle. With that gun I had to be at least 12 feet away or I would get wild extreme spreads (like a couple hundred FPS), but have also had the problem with a .44 Mag shooting 32grs. of W-296 with 180's.

My new Shooters Chrony Model F1 Master with the remote readout has 16 feet of cable connecting the readout to the screens, and has presented zero problems so far.
