I had to pass up a fine boar hog a little over an hour ago cause I just couldnt see the x hairs in my 2X Nikon. I could see the hog fine with naked eye and through my scope, but I just couldnt see the crosshairs well enough to be sure about shot placement. I'm wondering if a red dot would give me a few more minutes? These are WILD hogs. They dont leave heavy cover till last light to feed. You get another crack early in the AM as theyre heading back to bed up for the day. When the weathers warm they hole up down in a canebrake or briar patch in the swamp making stalking impossible, they hear you long before you see them and are gone giving you a woof just to let you know youve been busted. Cold weather gets them up and moving early but we wont get any of that till after Thanksgiving. Theyre hell on my food plots and the farmers corn. Any suggestions or experience with the dot sights? Recommendations on a good sight are welcome.

I've got one dot sight I like, it has both red and green dots. The green is better in low light as it is softer, the red tends to glare out the surroundings. Be sure to get at least a 30mm, the 1 inch Millet I used to have would be fine for a shotgun but too small when held at arms reach.

Rod, too.

I have a 30mm Ultra Dot 4 on my mod 29 & have no problem in low light. It has 11 intensity settings along with 4 dot sizes (4,8,12, & 16 moa). Just went into the basement & tried it on the 8moa dot size (where I leave it in 90% of hunting conditions) & with the brightness set on #2, there was no "glare out", just a sharp clear dot. An that was in light conditions that varied from so dark that I couldn't see the gun in my hand, to just light enough that you would be able to tell if the deer had antlers at 25 yds.
I love mine & don't see putting anything else on a revolver.

I have used a number of red dots, mostly 1" Ultra Dots, and like them. They will indeed give you a bit more useable shooting time than a scope or iron sights. However, as it gets darker, the light intensity will need to be turned down to 1 or 2, to prevent or reduce dot flare. I usually use 5 or 6 during daylight hours where I hunt. The 30 mm will indeed give more light and a better field of view. I just prefer the 1" size because it's so compact. All of mine have either 3 or 4 MOA dots, both of which I have found to be satisfactory for my use

I will second what Rod said, the green dot is the cat's meow in low light. It is very subtle and doesn't glare up the "sight picture" like the red can do. I find red more useful once the light gets better as there's no glare and the red shows up better on the target. Green is awful in good light, but is the ticket in dawn/dusk situations.

I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a handgun today.

I have really liked my Bushnell Firefly scope. It was really nice in the extreme light conditions. But I am just throwing it out there. I think the red dots are great, they are just not my cup of tea.

I have to second the 30 mm ultra dots. I have one on my 44 ruger sbh and I consider it the perfect revolver site. It has seen nothing but high horsepower 240 and 300 gr bullet loads and is holding up wonderfully. The ultra dots are THE red dot for bullseye shooting in my area. If you slide mount a sight to a 45 acp it takes alot of banging from the cycling of the slide.
It is one of the few sights that will hold up long term to that abuse. It has accounted for 3 deer so far with 2 being right at dusk.

You didnt mention what firearm but, my experience with the bushnell trophy have been great. Depending on time of day you can dial it in so the red/green dot is just right!

I took this 8 point this year at super close range running straight at me. I burried the dot in its chest and it was all over. If I had a scope I would have never even gotten a shot off.

I took a 325lbs. bear at 80 yards with a red dot. It hit right where I was aiming side to side and about six low (My fault) It was a very over cast day and on his black hair it showed up great.

used to have one on my smith 44 but took it off. In low light conditions even with the power setting on low,all i could see was the glare of the red dot.I had a tasco pro point.
