I am working up some loads for my 7 x 30 I am using 748 (it is what I had) seems to be working OK I am using the 120 Hornady V- Max and the 140 Nolser BT. The best groups have been with the 120 V-max. The 7 x 30 seem to work better with the flat base bullets (pressure wise) due to the short neck length but I really thought that the 140 BT would be the ticket. so far it has been lack luster. Just a side note the gun is shooting 1" groups @ 100 yds with the V-Max that is with a 4X scope. I just swaped the scope to a 2.5-8 I am thinking that will help my shooting some (we will see). Any sugestions would be helpful. Another note I like slow burning powders like H4895 if any one has a load with that type (90- 100% case capacity) please let me know. What are some OAL's with the spire point bullets??

If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

AA 4064 provided excellent load density and low extreme spreads for the 120 V-Max from my 7-30 Waters 14" hunter barrel. Groups were subminute. Velocity for this load was 2500+ fps in my gun.

Accurate Powders recommends a start load of 35 grains and a maximum of 38 grains under a 120 V-Max.

34.5 grains of IMR 4895 with a Nosler 120 grain Ballistic tip has given me consistent groups of 1" or smaller @ 100 yds out of two different barrels, velocity is around 2400fps.

I wound up with 2 loads the 748 36.5 on the 120 V max & H4895 34.5 on the 120 BT Nolser. They both shoot very good i wish i has a crono to test the true velocity.

A 120 gr NBT over 36gr of AA 2460 works well out of my Contender and my sons carbine. We've shot half a dozen deer with this load and all have been 1 shot kills. IMR 3031 was a good powder for me as well.

I have been shooting the 7-30 Waters in my Contender for about 10 years. In my Super 14 barrel I shoot 33 grns of IMR4895 with the 120grn V-Max and Fed 210 primer. I have run this over the chrono many times and it averages 2090-2100 fps. I would imagine you would get about 100 fps more.
I also shoot the Hornady 139grn SST with 30grn of IMR4895 from my 12" Hunter barrel. Never chrono'd it.
I have taken 6 or 7 whitetail with the 120 V-Max and two with the 139 grn SST. All have fallen within a couple of steps.
I also shot over a thousand rounds of Remington 140grn bulk SP with 30 grn of IMR4895 for silhouette. It would hammer the 200 meter Rams if hit above center. I don't think a deer would stand a chance against any of the loads you have.
Good luck with your Waters.

Mike

A couple weeks back I tested 120gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips loaded with H-4895 in reformed Remington .30-30 Brass with CCI BR2 Primers. Hodgdon's web site showed a max load with H-4895 of 34.5grs. using a 120gr. Nosler Flat Nose Solid Base Bullet in their Handgun Data Section.

I ended up slightly over their published max in my barrel with the lot number of components I was using. My average for 5 - 3 shot groups from the bench at 100 yards was .969" and the average muzzle velocity registered 2436 FPS with an extreme spread of 44 FPS and a standard deviation of 8.54 for 5 shots across the chronograph.

So far I am quite pleased as these were the first rounds out of this new Factory Stainless-Steel Contender Barrel. This is my first experience with a Super 14 7-30 Waters, and am anxiously awaiting this years Deer Season. My only other experience with the 7-30 Waters has been in a 10" T/C Contender and after the success I had with the 10" T/C I just had to try one if Super 14 configuration.

From what experimenting I have done, H 335 with a 139 SPBT or SST did very well for in 4 TC barrels. A 10 in, a 14 in and two 21 in. They were all shooting ˝ groups, or less, at 100 yards. With the 140 Nosler’s BT I had the best luck with Varget.

Hunlee, if what you are shooting works for you, then stick with it. YOU have to find what shoots in your barrel and not mine. With that being said, if one powder “A” and one bullet “B” worked in every chamber cut for the 7-30 Waters then there would be no need to have all the reloading supplies and data available. Not to mention the different styles of hunting and shooting that we do!

My Dad worked up a load for some 140 Nosler partitions for a pig hunt he went on one time. Every one laughed at it until they saw what a good job it did on a 400 pound pig!
