Good topic, as when I practice I use animal targets and not bullseys round targets simply because I am not hunting round circles.
The nice thing is these usually are available at your local archery shops, and the targets have the vitals outlined with a faint outline. Some even offer sticky replacement incerts but the poster type, I just either paste over the holes or use color paper to replace the whole area if I have put too many holes in it.

That's a great way to practice, I do the same when I can remember to stop at the stick and string shooters store.

I just stocked up on them at the local sporting goods store, I picked up a dozen.

I said both, but I think I would lean toward the shooter.

Practicing helps keep you focal on what your hunting or going to be hunting. Or if your just out hiking, and got to prevent an aggressive bear from making you their intended dinner. Here is my bear target from 25 yards, shot from an un-scoped Ruger SBH. Bears can be taken much closer if in defense as the need requires here in Montana. These targets would be much better if they were life size, but they are not. click to enlargeHere is a pic up much closer, showing a couple of throwers on the head area, but I practice for both areas on dangerous game. click to enlargeJust remember to practice and keep focal on what you may encounter and remember the "Clauswitz Rule" "Clauswitz says, you gotta plan for what your enemy can do, not what you'll think he'll do."

I enjoyed hunting more than shooting as a young man. As I get older I find more enjoyment in my children and grandchildrens hunting adventures than my own. However I still enjoy the look in their eyes when I spank them at the range. So I guess I am now a shooter and a hunter once removed.
Enjoy life but, remember we are only practicing for something better.

While i eat sleep and breath hunting! I can only do it when the season alows. I shoot at least twice a week and go through at least 100 rounds per weapon. Accept the 45-70 Contender and SRH 480. I usually only put about 50 throught them. Not that i cant handle it. I just dont have reloading equipment for them. YET!!

I like your way of practice on the bear outline, since bow season runs from september to febuary here. I got in to bow hunting to hunt longer, and scout for gun season. When shooting my bow at a life size foam deer it hit me, use the deer to practice with the emory--my rugerblack hawk. I have been doing it ever since. Use paper to get the zero life size deer and vitals for practice. I even setup a poor mans 3D gun range like the archers do, but with a revolver.

I would say I'm Both as I only took up Silhouette shooting to make myself better for hunting just like when I was into Archery I went to all the Trail shoots to make myself a better shot for Hunting

Picked hunting as that is mostly how I spend my free time. Down here in Georgia some of the best shooting is on armadillos and a moving target on the ground can add a real challenge to the handgun hunter in the off season.
