I just got a .357 mag revolver and plan to start hunting with it. Im curious as to what factory loads anyone else has found to work good and what to stay away from. Im gonna be hunting deer and hogs with it.
I am looking at the Hornady Leverolution ammo and the Corbon DPX rounds has anyone used either one with good success?
Thanks for the info.
Im new here.

Tha leverrevo ammo is great and so is the xtp stuff in 158 gn. But oh the possibilities with hand loading! My state wont let you hunt with .357 unless its a maxi , even though the mag with factory ammo works well. Glad to have you on board.

Welcome to H-H. You might want to look at Buffalo Bore, spendy but they push the enveloe further thatn most. Although they are within "safe" limits, some guns are made heavier that others. What make is your revolver?

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

I got a Taurus Tracker 627 ...its a 4 inch barrel, adjustable sights and 7 shots....already got a trigger job, that kicks butt, and its off at hard chroming right now. I cant wait for it to get back Ill post a pick of it once its back. Hard Chrome is awesome, no rust no holster wear.

the best hunting ammo I've seen for the 357 is the Winchester Partition Gold 180gr

I agree with Wapitirod. But I'm a big fan of the Partitions.

Welcome to the board, sounds like you are going to have a real nice handgun when it gets back.

FF, I figure you will be going for whitetail and if there is a chance that you can`t make that broadside double lung shot with you .357 ( and who is going to pass up a quarter-toward you shot at 50 yards on a nice 8 point) then go with what the members have recommended and give those 180gr Partitions a try. Winchester sells loaded ammo in their Supreme line or if you handload you can buy the Partition bullets from just about any of the ammo supply companies. I`ve tried Hornady`s 357 Leverolution ammo from my FA`s model 83 and found that it did not group well from my gun. Don`t know why but I was getting 2" to 3" groups at 50yds from a gun that gets the same size group at 100yds from friendly handloads. However, this ammo may shoot beautifully from your gun. Your 7 shot Taurus Tracker sounds like a real beauty. I have a 7 shot S&W 686 that shoots like a house on fire. Let us know how your gun shoots. Good luck, James

I like the 158 Hornady XTP and the 158 Speer Gold Dot. The partition's are very good and they still work well at low vel's. However the gold dots shoot the best groups in most of my guns.

If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

So I just shot my revolver and lever action with the new hornady leverolution bullets, they dont pattern worth a [censored]. I actually had better patterns with old winchester sxt. Gonna try some gold dot and some 110gr +P if I can find it in full jacket hollow points.

Yes stick w/the heavier stuff! That light 110 ammo is for people not deer. Federals, Corbons, Speer 170 Gold Dots, Grizzly, & Buffalo Bore. I probably left at least 1 out.

Welcome to the forum FF! there's are a lot of great information here.
I took my first handgun deer last year with my 6 inch 686. I could not make up my mind between a cast core or hollow point. So I loaded both. i recommend staying with the heavy bullets. I used the Winchester Supreme partition gold 180 grain hollow points and the Federal vital shock 180 grain cast core. Last year I lead with the cast core and followed it with a hollow point. I think I will reverse that this year.
My first round was off due to my nerves, but when that cast core hit her in the rear hip she took two full steps sideways away from me. The second shot was on the money and the hollow point dropped down after a ten yard run. she got up again and I didn't feel like tracking that day so I used a few more bullets on her. As you will find on this forum most people think the 357 is a little thin for white tail. I agree with them. but as long as you keep you distance within 50 yards or so and you can make good placement you will have no problems with your 357
Here is the link to my post with pics of my deer and my Smith.

thanks for the reply. I just received my Cast Core 180 grains today and went on down to the range. Nice groups at 25 yards. Im happy with em. I need to adjust the scope just a little more but Ill wait until I can get up north to the BIG range and shoot some 50 yard groups. Ill holster the .357 for close range and have the rifle along for everything else.

This year, my wife is hunting with me for her first time. I bought her a Remington CDL .243 Ill be hunting in a pop up blind with her beside me and Im sure Ill give her first shot of anything that comes through. I hope she gets one!
