I'm thinking of getting a 460 S&W. I know, i just got the 480. But i read that the 460 is flat shooting and accurate. Plus i can shoot 45 and 454 in it. I like the PC models beter then the standard model. What's your guys 2 cents?

You can shoot the 45LC and 454 from the 460 but the accuracy, or lack thereof, makes it a pointless exercise. Why shoot something that can't hit where you want it. You'd be far better served to load down 460 brass to those power levels. I'll be honest, I think of my revolvers as 100 yard, or a little more, tools and don't feel that an inch less trajectory is a big deal. It does deliver a big punch though, on both ends. If I need to shoot further I have other tools for that, but if the 460 turns your crank, by all means go for it ;-)

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

The cartridge is realy what has my attention. DA revolvers aren't my thing. I like the SA Rugers and FAs. The 200gr Xbullet at 2300 fps. Really has me interested.

Crew Dawg, since you like single actions, have you considered the Magnum Research BFR in 460 S&W? I had a .454 Casull BFR follow me home the other day. I was very impressed with its quality. I'll see how it performs tomorrow at the range.

You Know, i completely forgot about them. I was looking at one in 45-70 at a gun show back in June. I didn't get it because i already have a 45-70 hunter barrel on my T/C. I regret passing up a NIB BH 45 colt for 300 bucks too. One of the stories i read said the author busted a speed goat at 200yds with a dead on hold. That's impresive to me. No mention of 1000+ shots on PD's from or about xphunter, It threatens my manhood. But i figure 10 years and thousands of dollars in ammo from now. I'll be able to hang with him. Maybe!

My PC .460 "turns my crank" quite well. I went from the XVR 8 3/8" to my PC with the 10 1/2" and, after lots of practice, feel very confident with the Hornady 200gr SST @ 150 yards. The recoil with that ammo is not bad at all, but if you want to be a badass and run some Corbon 395 gr. thru it be my guest--just wrap your wrists before doing so!
I think I can speak for SChunter also in saying that the S&W PC 460 is one fine shooter!

You'll be kicking yourself on that .45-Colt Blackhawk for a long time to come. The .45 Colt is a great round. As for the 460 S&W in a BFR, I think you would like it. The longer cylinder should add weight to help tame the higher recoil I would expect in the 460. I shot my .454 Casull BFR today and was very impressed! This is a 5 shot, 20 yard offhand group of Hornadys 240 gr XTP/MAG they list at 1900 fps. The scattered rounds was definitly due to the shooter, not the gun. I can hardly wait to start working up loads for this one.

I just started a post about two weeks or so ago asking about both PC models in .460. I haven't really gotten the answers im looking for but thats OK. I think Ive made up my mind on which of the two models Ill be getting. Although recoil doesn't bother me in the least, the construction of the Compensated Hunter's barrel, compensator and shroud sounds to me like it will provide better accuracy than will the standard fluted barrel of the Magnum hunter (12" bbl). At this point, and after what I've been through with my ex SRH .454, I'm willing to saccrifice some velocity and power for increased accuracy.

The S&W compensated hunter was the one i was looking at. It looks like it could be a very nice weapon. Not too shaby there pab1. I hope to be able to do that with my 480 soon. I wish i had a couple thousand bucks laying around. I'd shure like to see how it handles buffalo.

Crew Dawg,

Kingfisher tells it true...the PC guns can shoot! I have the Compensated Hunter in the 10 1/2" barrel - I'm shooting the 200 SST's for the same ballistics reason you mentioned (fast and flat), in addition to the economy (~$23/box of 20) and especially wrist preservation Kingfisher cited. Besides, I'm just hunting Bambi - no buffs this hunting season. Although SC does have a lottery...

The .45 cowboy bullets have been fun for plinking, but not much on accuracy - good for trigger pull practice with slightly more pop than my snap caps. The .454 ammo has been surprisingly accurate, using the same 260 gr Fusion load that my FA loves so well. The other benefit is approximately a 25% reduction in recoil - but shoots significantly higher than my 460 loads.

The recoil in the Comp gun isn't terrible, but the percussion, concussion and general "fire"power is a sight to behold and feel! (See pics from a friends Compensated Hunter in my gallery)

Best wishes to you, and no matter what you decide, you can't have too many guns! And by the way, thanks to you for your service!

Dur

I have the 460 XVR revolver & I love it.I just started reloading for it & I also use the 240 gr. xtp bullets. So far I have worked up a load using 48 grs. of H110. It shoots really good.I figure this should take care of deer & black bear. Have you tried the Barnes all copper bullets yet? I believe the 225 gr. bullet will do the same job the 240 gr. xtp bullet will do but will shoot flatter.
