I wondered into some extra cash...don't ask where...and thinking that I need to rebarrel my Striker 22-250. IMO, I have too many centerfire .22 caliber SP's....four various T/C barrels and three bolt pistols (XP.222, XP .222 RMI and the 22-250 Striker).

Already have a XP .250 Sav Imp, Striker .260 Remington and XP 7mm WSM. So what do I replace the 22-250 barrel with? I know it will be from McGowan...at least 17", SS and at least a .75" muzzle dia. Maybe a plain vanilla .308 Winny? Something a little more precision oriented like a 6BR? Not really interested in anything over .30 caliber. How about a .270WSM to compliment the 7mm WSM? I have a TON of 140gr .277" bullets!! Also been reading some good things about the 6.5WSM and super fast 140gr bullets.

BTW...the 22-250 barrel is a varmint weight rifle barrel cut to 15" and is SUPER accurate. It will be for sale if you guys help me pick a new cartridge.

Geeze Dan, I see an obvious gap there. How about a 6mmx284.

6mm-6.5x47 Lapua
6-284
25-284 or 257 Roberts AI (9 or 10T)
6.5x284
6.5WSM
I wouldn't even consider a 308 winnie, but a 300 WSM or Dakota
(9 or 10T)

All 1-8 Twist barrels on the 6's and 6.5's

6x284 or 6.5x284 would be my choices.
6 BR would not be a bad choice.

6BR gets my vote. The 6BR has been on my short list ever since I started reloading.

6.5/284. And heck, since I'm using your money, maybe I'll flute it.

6BR gets my vote by far. you already have plenty of horsepower that would be duplicated. prices are up....n you "need" a shooter, not a powder hog.

I would vote for the 6 BR Remington it seems to be the best for short tubes
(< 15") 75Gr @ 3000+ It is just a cool little round.

Does anyone know if there is a diference in the 6BR Remington and the 6BR Norma (I think it is just the primer size but I am not sure) I think the 6BR Norma is tuned more for large bullets too.

If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

I'd say the 270WSM

It has more to do with how the chamber is cut for the particular brass being used....a few ten thou's here and there make a huge diff in brass quality and in the precision/accuracy of the final product.

I know Norma has more freebore than the other to make room for the large bullets. I think the land angle is cut different too but I am not quite certain. My old 7 BR stock XP would shoot sub MOA all day long. The HS was even better but I would think the 6BR Remington would be the ticket not the Norma YES?

Ern...I'm not really sure. Jimmylee and I were at the range yesterday evening and discussed this at length. I'm only going to do it if something jumps out at me as a must have cartridge. For now I'm just not seeing it.

rupe...what did you ride? I'm on my third KTM in 25 years of riding on and off. Got a 300MXC this spring to ride with my 13 year old nephew at our farm. A load of fun! Doctor retired me too, but I didn't listen

I rode several different ones. But mostly I rode a CR500 and a very tricked out XR600 it had CR500 forks, the motor was sent to XR's Only and came back as a 628cc guarentied to do 120mph all day. It's the place that builds the Baja race engines. Had the rear shock rebuild for motocross. Supertrap exhaust. I won my last Championship on the CR500. It cornered alot better then the XR did on an MX track. I raced YZ250 one year, but didn't like the 250 as much as the big bores. I started riding when I was 10 or 11 on a 1964 Greeves then my first race bike was a 1969 Kawasaki 238 Green Steak, do you remember those Two? After the doc. told me that my back wasn't going to servive much more I figured I better stop. Now that I have a bunch of titanum in my back, I don't think getting on one would be to bright. Although I have thought about trials riding. I miss racing alot. Now I get my jollys from wheeling my Jeep and handgun hunting.
