For all the hunters that use a range finder, what brand is the best for the price? I have a friend that has a Leica but the price is high.

I have the Nikon 800 and I love it. It worked far better than the Leica that I tried using in Africa a couple years ago. Now the Leica is easier to see through because of better optics in the monocular but it was very hard to get a distance reading on anything.

I have a Leica 1200, and a 600 Bushnell Compact (Also used the 400 & 800 Bushnell). All have been great for me.

i have the cheap bushnell($180.00)and it works very well.it ranges good out to about 450-500 yds.last year i ranged the deer and turkey before i shot.i would like to say that the clarity of the unit isnt the best, but for the money it is hard to beat.jim257

Have you ever used the old type of range finder? Is it worth the money to upgrade and get a lazor range finder? I plan to use this on a antilope hunt this fall.

Thanks for the info....Before I drop $300-$400 on a rangefinder, I just wanted to know what you guys use. I wish that there was a product testing for hunting gear. The best scope, rangefinder, spotting scope and the like.

You need to look into the Newcon Optic 1200 Range Finder at Midway. I used one this weekend shooting Prairie Dogs and it was spot on and very clear. Easy to use. I have a 400 yd Bushnell that will only pick up PDogs out to about 200 and deer to 250yds. If it is a tree or building it will range to 400+. The Newcon is just a little bigger than the Bushnells but it sure is nice for the price. I will have one by next month.
Here is a link to the Newcon Rangefinder- Newcon Optics

I have the Bushnell Yardage Pro 800. So far it has worked good for me. Although it is interesting that I can range something more than once and the read out changes. It is only a yard or two so it doesn't matter. I did range out my gravel pit in a couple of places and then measured it with a long tape measure. It was spot on. Slim

Tusk,

Have been using the Leica 1200 for a couple of years. It works well for me and will range out to 1100 + yds. The 7X monocular works ok as a convenient spotting scope for game. I would assume that there is something better on the market by now. The Leica is easy to operate, one button no menus.
