Does anyone know anything about the NC Star pistol scopes? I'd like to pick up a scope for my SRH 454 but don't want to drop another $150.00. The local Gun Shop (primarily Black Guns)will special order one but I've never heard of them or even used a pistol scope. Please advice.
Thanks
Bill

I don't know about the NC from personal experience but from what I've heard I wouldn't even think about putting it on 454 unless you want to use it for a baby rattle after a couple shots. I would look at a fixed 2x from Weaver or Nikon or step up to Burris or my favorite a Leupold. If you are looking at a variable I'd look at Bushnell Elite 3200 2-6x or the Leupold 2.5-8xas they seem to have the most constant eye relief through all powers but you wouldn't be going wrong with the Burris, Nikon or Weaver either.

I'm currently testing one...I'll let you know. So far it's working fine. I agree with wapitirod, its better to use something of higher quality if you can afford it. I really like the Bushnells.

I too was in the same boat. As a stay at home dad, it's tough to justify the cost of a nice Bushnell, Burris or Leupold, so I decided to give one a try and bought a NcStar 2-7x32. I mounted it on an Encore .44 pistol and it worked exceptionally well and groups were under 2" at 75 yards. It held tight and I never had to readjust it and it saw around 300 rounds. I then decided to try their 4x on my Encore black powder barrel. It worked equally as well as the 2-7, and I like the fixed 4x's eye relief better than the 2-7 so I got one for the .44 as well. Sighted it in and haven't had to adjust it yet. I paid $41 (with free shipping) for the 2-7 at http://www.opticsplanet.com and when I was done with it I resold it on eBay for $36.55. I lost $a few bucks, but I look at that like a rental fee. :-) I bought both of the fixed 4x scopes from http://www.opticsplanet.com for $35 each and free shipping as well. There's no doubt that they aren't too pretty and nor are they anything like looking through a high end scope, but they'll do until the funds are available to upgrade. I just keep saving my allowance and figure I'll eventually find a used Burris, Nikon or Leupold on Ebay that I can afford. In the mean time I'll keep shooting these. If one quits I'll let you know when & why. I hope that that helps. Thanks, Brett

If you can scrape together enough for a Leupold then do so. You won't be sorry.
You can find them in some gunshops used for sale and get a good price on them. Also check some of your large chain stores, sometimes they will have them at real good prices as well. If not follow Wapitirods advise.

Can anyone tell me about red-dot scopes for pistols. I've never tried one and I see them on some on guns in posted pictures. I am interested in hearing the pros and cons from folks that currently use them or have used them. Brett

I liked mine, but my eyes are getting worse so I had to go with some magnification. They are quick and accurate(Close range) easy to use. They are made for under 100 yards in my opinion, because your dot can cover tomuch of your target when you have to reach out and touch something along way out. Then your much better off with a X scope. Mine has 10 settings for the brightness of the red dot, so that makes it good for bright sun light or the gray of early morning or sundown.

Red dots are great for fast target acqisition, as you can easily use both eyes open. I prefer the new green/red dots myself, and only use the green on them any more. It is easier to pick up in low light and has very little tube glare. I also suggest the style with the intensity dial on top rather than the left side which always bugged my off eye (right handed shooting) Stay away from 1" tubes as they are fine for shotguns but get real small at arms reach, get a 30mm at the least. Some sights offer multiple reticle styles at the turn of a dial but they don't hold POI from reticle to reticle. You can drop $400 on an Aimpoint if you want but my Tasco's have held up fine on 22 to 45 Colt to 50 cal BP. I find a 5 moa dot to be a good all-around size.

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

Follow the above advice and save until you can squeeze a Leupold 2x or 4x. There was one recently on one of the forums, used but like new for $125. They usually run around $300 new, but finding a good used one for a decent price shouldn't be too hard. Second would be the fixed Weavers. Good scope for the money and used examples can be cheaper still.
