Hey guys, check this out, home made sand bags. Got the idea from the range master at my local range. I even added carrying handles. I sewd them myself on the sewing machine. First time ever using a sewing machine. Does this mean I'm in touch with my feminine side? Anyone else here in touch with their feminine side? Does anyone else here even have a feminine side?. If anyone has any ideas for more home made stuff, post it.

I have a set of bags that I made about 15yrs ago....filled them with rice...worked VERY well. Still use them for field shooting positions.

It's not feminine, it's called ballanced..

I posted these holsters I made a while back. I make my own leather goods for traditional archery and muzzleloading too. The handle on your shooting bags is a good idea! I made a set of denim shooting bags (filled with rice) like yours a while back but did not think to add the handle. I get much more satisfaction out of using gear I have made rather than buying it.

it's not feminine until you start putting little frilly, lacey thingys all over them, then you'll need to re evaluate your manhood but so far that's just being resourceful.

I agree Rod, but that range is a little on the fancy side what with the place mats and decorative plants and all. Do they make you use coasters too?

Pab1 pretty work on the holsters. I had a friend from out in Montana, he talked like it was heaven!

TCman were did you get the wood for all those gun stocks. That is some pretty stuff. Is it figured maple?

LOL, you guys are great, and talented too! I think one of the best parts is the time you take to create these things and then the time using them. Store bought stuff is nice but home made stuff is cool.

I made some shooting stix from arrows and an 8" piece of 3/8" gas line and a couple field points.


Very versitle and light.

I send Ken Netting a lock, stock, and barrel and he makes everything else. He even pours all of his brass for his work.

Mark, are those full length ribs your specialty, sweet? Can you do them for Ruger S/A's? I'd be interested ;-)

Thanks Rod.......so far I've only done them on Contenders but I'll bet they'd look great on a Ruger S/A.......good idea,I'll have to work on that and see what I can come up with, I'll let you know how it works out when I've had a chance to try one.

I made some med. size sand bags by taking the food vac machine bags. I put the sand in sandwich bags turned them upside down in the vac bags and sealed them covered them with cloth. glued the ends of the cloth. they work fine

This is a holster I just made for my 6" Freedom Arms .454 Casull. Its the same style I made for my Blackhawk and Single-Six only with a lot more leather to allow for the scope. This can be worn strong side or crossdraw.

I agree Pab. Excellent looking rig. The only change I'd like to see is a thumbreak type retention system. living in bear country I want something that comes from the holster smoothely!

Gene and DertieDawg, how are you guys keeping your sandbags from coming apart? I admired DertieDawgs sandbags so much that I made one myself. I really liked the idea but the fabric didn't last one cylinder. I thought it was heavy enough but the compression said different.

Hi there Hunlee hear!!!!!Only thing that hunlee have that is home made is ammo belt!!!!!Hunlee have friend to Hunlee make two ammo belt that hold 25 round each and Hunlee ware them crossed on chest when hunting!!!!!Friend to Hunlee good with leather and make these two belt for Hunlee!!!!!375 Windchester ammo fit in loop of leather on said belt!!!!!Hunlee is ready for action when Hunting!!!!!Much venison is needed to feed all children that Hunlee fathered with the wife(285lb)!!!!!

Hey Jeremy I didn't think that Dawg would have used the bags for wheel guns. Too much fire and brimstone coming from that hogleg.

Hey Raf! Haven't seen you on here in a while. I just thought that he was using the Redhawk sittin on it in his pics gallery. I didn't put to much time or effort in my sandbag so it was no great loss. Maybe a 1/2 hour to put together and about 25 seconds to trash it! I am working on a wooden one now!

Jeremy, I am glad you liked the bags. Someone on this site used rice instead of sand, which is a great idea (much lighter). I do use the sand bags with the SRH and they do just fine. I keep the bag closer to the end of the muzzle and they dont get damaged. I have a nice tight cylinder gap in my SRH, which may help to prevent too much gas from escaping and damaging the bags. I recently posted some information about buying a revolver and what to look for (see cylinder gap) http://www.handgunhunt.com/forum/ubbthre...true#Post33729. Also, you can also use a piece of cardboard to help protect the bags.

I have a thin piece of leather I put over the bags to protect them from the cylinder gap blast. The super mags are really bad for that.

Hey Jeremy, been busy with a few new things lately. I got bit with the xbow thing. Oh yeah, did I mention the '63 Zouave .58 cal. civil war percusion gun. I still love my wheel guns and shoot them often. But now that I am shooting the xbow, I will have another month in the woods hunting my favor dinner food, venison backstaps.

DertieDawg, when used the bags I made, I do remember have the cylinder up close to the bags. I backed off after the first couple of shots, but it was to late! I will make another one with some soft leather on top of it. I really liked the sand bag idea though, very solid.

Raf, good luck with the Xbow! I got one the first year that VA made em legal. They are nice to shoot! I am sure you are careful, but I know a guy that peeled the skin on his thumb a few inches to his thumbnail. He left it up a little to high one time target shootn.

Sorry have not been online for a couple of days. I made a couple of small bags(2x2x6)and put one or more out front so there is a space between the cylinder and bags.The leather is a good idea or a pice of thin rubber.

I second Tigger's thin piece of leather solution. The range at Ft. Polk has sand bags and I've learned to drape a piece of leather over them to keep from ripping them up w/ the 500 S&W BFR!

Vance, after your post, I decided to give a thumb-break style holster a try since I consider this to be a bear defense gun. I made this holster for my BFR .454 Casull (yes, it is a BFR, its just wearing SBH grip panels). This is the fourth holster I've made and I wanted to try a different carry style than the previous three. Like the others, this one can be carried strong side or crossdraw.

How much time do you spend on one of these? They look great! Also, about how much do you have invested in making one? I'm sure its pennies compared to store prices.
