"not happy" with a 7-08 is VERY surprising. it's hard to beat, and there's not THAT much difference in it n the .308 when you really get down to it. so....the .308 might barely make you happy...lol.

I would look very closely at the 150 and 165gr. Nosler BT for deer. They are probably the best bullets out there for deer in a .308 caliber single shot pistol. The gun is capable of much more than 200 in the right situations.

I have a 26" .308 heavy barrel that I love shooting. I haven't had any problems shooting anything out of it as of yet. Not only is it great for deer, but it's pretty good for coyotes when you load saboted .224 bullets. Brett

I killed several deer with the 7mm-08, but out at 125yrds the bullet did not go thru the deer it just went a little into the lung. I think the bullet was the problem a federal fusion. I was told that the 308 with the right bullet has better performance at the longer ranges. The problem I don't reload. also not to limit the gun to 200yrds. thanks for the info I am new and this is great!!!

I was reloading a 130 gn Hornady single shot pistol bullet for my 15" 30-06 encore. I dropped some pretty heavy whitetails right where they stood with that bullet.

I have a 708 and it has been awesome. Complete pass threw on a 250 pig at 200 yards with a 139 SST.(That was a handload) BUT for the non-handloader the 308 is a much better choice IMHO.

Thanks tcman, I guess I need to give the 708 another try. I shot the 308 this after noon with win. 168gr. I think it is going to be a good round(never used one before). I have killed a few deer with a handgun and I think it is more important to get the right bullet than in a rifle. What do you think ballistic tip or pointed soft point?

I don’t know if this helps or not, but this is a 140 Nosler BT shot out of a 7-30 Waters at 2250fps. I think it did a wonderful job. The deer sat down never to get up again! I would shoot what groups better and not worry about it! The nice thing about the 308 is it has a much larger selection of factory loaded ammo.

Not a problem AND welcome to the sight. I think you had a bad experience with the 708 and that is cool. I would shoot what every you feel the most comfortable with!!!!! Ultimately, YOU are the one that has to be happy!

OK, I will stop being a windbag!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I bought a TC Encore in 7MM-08 last year, and had good luck with the Hornady 139gr SST. Killed two deer one at 75 yards and the other 125 with complete passthrough. The accuracy with these bullets and the Encore was very suprising, 3 shoot group @100 yards was a litle less than 1" using sandbags.
