Several good cast bullets companies Rim Rock, Western Bullet, Cast Performance, Montana Bullet works, & the likes. Look through Midway I beleive they carry a brand call true cast in a 405gr gas check. Also some of the cast bullet companies sell in 50 bullet quanities.

38 grains of IMR 4198 with a 300 grain Hornady HP is an accurate load in my Marlin Guide Gun. Out of an 18-1/2" barrel, it runs ~ 1500 - 1600 FPS, close to a factory equivalent. I have gotten 1" groups at 100 yards with this load. 38 grains seems to the sweet spot spot; it shoots like crap until I reach 47 grains, then the groups tighten up again, velocity around 1950 FPS.

Also, using the 405 grain Cast Performance WLN/GC bullet and 46 grains of H322, I get around 1500 FPS and cloverleafs at 100 yards.

Try 50 sized .458 & 50 sized .459. The right cast bullet should be VERY accurate.

10drenkor… I have tried 10 different loads in my 45-70 before I sent it back. In my research I found out from reps and go show people that there are a lot of TC barrels that need help. Particularly 45-70 barrels. It is one thing to get a bad 30 Herrett barrel... you can have it rechambered. But a 45-70 does not have any options! I have had two factory 45-70 barrels and will only own a custom one now!

It took me 14 tries to find a load my 22-250 liked. Luckily I had that many different types of bullets and powders. The 45-70 is much more expensive to feed.

I have PM’d Hunlee on several occasions asking him questions and even getting advice. This is my conclusion… he defiantly has his head on straight. After I read in between the lines his comments have always been thought out or straightforward. In short, you can not please every all the time. And if you try you drive yourself crazy. So……… if you don’t like Hunlee, just ignore him and just don’t read his posts!

I had a 308 in a ruger shot great 1/4-1/2" groups but kick the hell out me. Anyway found that the chamber was chambered for a cartridge between a large 308 heading to an '06. And the other is slugging your barrel with a soft lead bullet and mic for size.

Hunlee, Lyman 3rd edition handgun for a 405 gr bullet (#457193) no gas check they are recommending RX7 33.0grs starting and maxing at 41.0grs with the 41.0 being recommended as the accurate load. Their loads seem to correspond to trapdoor or less in loadings Lyman 48th edition

At 45-70 velocities, I would definetly want the gas check (heck, I want them at 1300 fps in my 44 mag!).

both of my 45-70 contender barrels really liked the 440gr CP over Benchmark.

hunlee i know you are a good shot but ineed to ask.Is the 45-70 just too big for you does the recoil make you flinch and spoil your aim?I once had a big rifle do that to me. sold the gun and baught something smaller i enjoy shooting aim gott better.
