I am shopping for my first revlover, it will be for plinking mostly. I am going to hold out until I find the right 44 mag, but wanted to know what your preferences are as far as 6" barrel vs. 8" barrel. I will not be mounting a scope on this gun. However, I am looking for something that is relatively accurate. Also I will be carrying it a lot as a side arm What do you guys like?

What caliber? I would say if you are carrying it as a sidearm and/or plinking a 4-6" barrel would be just fine! I would think the 8 inch barrel would get to be a little too cumbersome packing while hiking or tromping around in the woods.

fOR PLINKING, BEAR DEFENCE WHIL HIKING/BOWHUNTING, (forgive the caps lock)& short range hunting (due to no optics) I'm really enjoying packing my new-to-me 4.75" Ruger Blackhawk in 41 mag in it's Simply Rugged brand crossdraw holster. I carried it during our early bow moose season & it's lightweight & short barrel made it easy to forget it's even there. It won't be my primary moose gun, but with heavy cast bullets (265s right now loaded hot) I wouldn't be afraid to tap a moose at 50 yds. I don't think I'd ever pick something with a barrel over 6" for a "carrying/plinking" gun. Now for just a range plinking gun an 8" revolver would be great!

4 1/2-6" is what I prefer for carrying strongside or crossdraw.

Id go 6" if youre not putting optics on it and its going to be more of a sidearm, than a primary method of taking game.
I have more guns than I need, but not nearly as many as I want...

If this is your first revolver and you don`t know when you may purchase another one...my thought would be to go for the six inch barrel length as a good comprimise between the 4"-6" or 8" lengths. Its no harder to carry then a 4" and a little easier then an 8" with good ballistics and sighting plane. Good luck...

I also recommend a 6" length...actually, a 5 1/2 to 6 1/2" length, since you might select a single action.

Add me to the above. I'd choose the 7.5" or 8" if it was a dedicated hunting revolver. But for plinking/carrying/close hunting, it's hard to beat the 5.5" to 6.5" guns.
Good luck in your search. There are plenty of good ones out there; new and used. I'd favor the various Rugers in SA or DA, but there are others that are worthy as well.
I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a handgun today.
