Hello everyone ! I am new to HHM and I'm looking for a few fellow 460 handgun hunters to enlighten me on some issues I have. First I'm am trying to find out what kind of optics choices I have for my PC 460XVR. I hope someone has some field experience on the subject. I just bought my pistol about 3 weeks ago and I must say I LOVE IT ! I plan on using it this season to hunt deer and wild boar here in TN. Some information on shooting sticks and if they work well is another interest of mine. Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome URG, I have a Burris 2x7 E-Dot on my .460. I really like that scope. I've never had any problems with it. I have never used shooting sticks with mine. I hunt out of tree stands that have a rail around them that I use for a rest.

I prefer the Explorer Monopod to shooting sticks, and I have both. It adjusts from sitting to standing heights and doubles as a walking stick. Keep your thumb away from the cylinder gap ;-)
Rod, too.

Welcome to the sight URG!!!! I don’t have a 460… but I do have some nice hand cannons. The only advice I can give on scopes is make sure you get a LER or EER type scope with that brute! Every one has their preference in scopes… but I like Leupold and Burris. It is hard to go wrong with them. I have some a couple of Bushnell on my 3200 my 44 mags and have not had any problems. Don’t cheat yourself on mounts either. It is worth buying a good pair of mounts and they will save you time, money, and headaches in the future.

hello fellow 460 owner, I have the 10.5 pc model and currently have it topped with a 2x leupold no problems and a great scope. I had problems with the variable nikons and after 2 replacements I purchased the leupold. I am thinking about going to a variable to take advantage of the guns ability to reach out beyond the 100 yard range I feel the 2x is suited for it will definetly be a leupold if and when I do . As for shooting sticks I use the stoney point safari stix that fold up and are easy to use. this year I bought the stoney point polecat bipod hven't tried it out yet but is well built and adjusts well. I have 3 rings for my mount on the scope by the way. good shooting

Keep your thumb away from the cylinder gap ;-) Interesting! I just bought a monopod from the NRA online store and will try to test it this weekend. I'm a bit concerned about the gas from the cylinder gap but will wear a rugged jacket... But I would think my preferred hunting method would be tree stand hunting with a rail as an integral rest.

Wow !! Thank you all for your responses (very fast). I'll be looking into a nice Leupold or a Burris since it seems they both have been field tested by the fine big bore people here at HHm. Anyone have any comments on whitetail hunting with the PC 460XVR? I am thinking about using the 45 long colt option with this pistol this season for whitetail, I think it should perform just fine and with (maybe) less damage to the meat. However, I will put the 454 into action when it comes to the wild boar here, and hopefully next year I will be able to return out west and put the 460 to the test on Utah elk. So far the only 460's I have run through the pistol is custom Hornady 200gr FTX. Some comments on ammo for this plan of mine should help me take the guesswork out until I have a chance to start handloading the 460. Does anyone here handload 454s? I have my dies but upon researching the topic it makes me wonder if I should just stick to handloading 45lc and the 460.

URG,
Congrats on the 460 - I have the Leupold 2.5x8 on mine and love the capability to zoom in at distance.
I haven't shot the 45 LC stout loads in mine, but I would suggest sticking to the 454 and 460 loads for hunting, and leave the 45's (cowboy action loads) to plinking out of the big gun...
Good luck this season!

URG, you're gonna be so happy you found this site. The resident posters here are the most helpful folks I have met in a long time. I'm a new .460 S&W guy too, although mines not a PC version. As for using the .45 LC, I wouldn't worry in the least about damage to the meat. I can't imagine that the .460 will waste any more. Good luck this season!

One thing about shooting 45LC in a .460 chamber is the considerable freebore often leads to a degradation in accuracy. It might be "dead deer" accurate, but you'd be better served loading down full length .460 brass to the "hot" 45LC levels if you can, JMHO.
Rod, too.

Congrats on the 460 you will love it for sure . I use mounted sticks on my 460 , ok it's a mounted Bipod from Versa Pod , they work great . My optics are a Burris 4x12 Ballistic E Dot although the picture shows a Burris 4x12 Posi-loc. I have since since sold that one and purchased this one , just do not have a current picture yet. Enjoy your 460. RR

I have the PC 10.5 with an Aimpoint 9000 riding it. Hornady 200 gr. SST works very well on whitetails. I prefer hunting from treestands and use different types of rests--from lock-ons I use an adjustable swivel rest with a yoke. Ladder stands with shooting rails I use a saddle bag draped over the rail. My Summit climber has a swivel/yoke rest that works well. When hunting from a permanent blind I use a bull bag with butt pillow. Ground blinds usually call for the Stoney Point tripod sticks. To me, the key to my long-ranging with this weapon is locking down the butt. Several gadgets I use to help with this is the Leg Pod made by Horton and the Steady Rest by Knight and Hale. The use of these gizmos doesn't qualify me as an elite marksman but it does help me with steadying the gun and locking down the butt to make a clean, lethal shot. That's what I care about--not shooting paper freehand at 100 yds. but downing a trophy with my .460 at 100+...any way I can.
