I prefer to hunt with a gun that has had a fouling shot fired. How long do you feel a barrel can be left without cleaning after a fouling shot without risking damage to the bore?

If I know my guns are going to be sitting for 4 months or more I will run at least lightly clean my barrel (run a couple of patches of Kroil down the barrel. Otherwise I don't worry about it.

I always make a trip to the range a couple of weeks prior to season to check my zero(s) and after shooting it stays that way until after season is over. Unless you are shooting corosive surplus fodder you can leave a couple of months with no problem, IMO.

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

I normally fire one or two fouling shots at the beginning of the season and then clean it after the season is over but I clean my guns after every range outing and I tear them completely down once or twice a year.

Please excuse my ignorance fellas, but what is a fouling shot and what is it's purpose?

The only thing I'll add is that I will clean the barrel if it gets exposed to rain otherwise I'll keep it dirty once season comes in. If I go to the range I'll clean it at the range and the re-foul it so that first shot isn't from a clean bore.

DD that first shot on a clean bore doesn't always go where the ones that follow will go so most of us will foul the barrel.

I'm pretty much with the other guys. Keep an oily rag handy to go over the outside, but the barel isn't a big concern during hunting season.

Dawg, some barrels have a slightly different point of impact with a dirty (fouled) barrel than with a clean one. Most target shooters will shoot a fouling shot or two before any match.

Thanks guys! Bear season here runs two and a half months so I was concerned about leaving the barrel dirty that long. It sounds like I have nothing to worry about.

Yup, foul before season and clean after. If I hunt on a really wet rainy day I will clean the barrel. During the summer when I'm charlie hunting I usually clean the barrel only if accuracy suffers, which means I have had a good season with a couple hundred shot. Then I will foul it before going back to the field.

I have a few barrels that I cannot hit anything with the 1st shot, it has to have at lease one fouling shot down the barrel. For deer season if I have to I'll stop along the road and pop off one in the ditch before I hunt. Richard..

I agree I like to run a shot or two down the barrel before season and leave it that way.
