Well which is better? The main purpose would be for a light backup and short range hunting pistol. Perferably in a blackhawk 4 3/8 barrel.

Hands down the 41

Save the 357 for wild dogs and wompus cats.

If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

41 nodoubtaboutit. You'll have to look hard for a 4-5/8" BH in it tho.

I have a 41 with a 4&3/4" barrel (started as a 7.5") & I love it.

For the few game animals I`ve taken with both the 357 and 41 mags
it seems that the 41 hits harder so for a backup I would prefer to have the extra power of the 41 in case I`am looking at the south bound end of a wounded noth bound animal.

FOURS! Always start w/FOURS! 41,44,45 etc. I love my 41 as well. Be advised the Rugers don't handle much above 220gr bullets very well though. The factory twist is a little slow for the heavies.

In the words of Jeff Copper concerning minimum caliber for the taking of game: no less then .40 caliber
no less then 200grs in bullet weight
no less then 1000 feet per second.......

I'd pack the .357 mag, its easier to find rounds for and cheaper to shoot. I love the .41 but cost and finding who carries it have kept me with a .357 for years now.

Sapper, welcome to the forum. I believe Lars is a reloader so he won't be too worried about finding rounds.

I only have to go to my safe to find one!! Also have a 4-5/8" .357 Mag to match!!

I'd take either one and feel fine. My .357 Mag load uses 180gr Penn TC cast bullets over Lil'Gun at 1300fps. My brother used this load from a M94AE Trapper and put four holes in one deer w/ one bullet. The deer was quartered away and looking back over its rear end at him from 65yds...the bullet entered the front of the hip, exited opposite side just ahead of the hip, re-entered the shoulder and exited the neck. Incredibly awesome penetration!!
