I know very little about these. There is one here a guy wants to trade for my AR-15 it has three barrels .44 mag w/Tasco scope (I know).45/.410 with choke and .223 with Burris 6x. What issues should I look for in these? What does a package deal like this usually bring? I really don't need it and could easily pass.
Thanks, Shawn

I should mention that the barrel lengths are .44 10 inches, .45-.410 10 inches, .223 14 inches.

I'll give it a go, but I'm not that up on contenders. If somebody has a better grip on prices please correct me.
Used frame $175-200.00 Used barrels $125-165.00 Tasco scope, maybe $50.00. I have heard some of the first (old) Tascos were good. Burris 6X $100.00
So if you figure everything at the HI side of values it's worth $845.00. What's the AR worth used?

Done deal- the AR I built my self for about 700.00. Thanks so much for the vote of confidence. I will drive 1.5 hours North in the AM to meet the the seller. So I guess ~50.00 in diesel on top of the deal, would ride the bike but it is raining all day to morrow here and would look kind of funny with AR slung on back.
Any thing to look for that would be bad?

Thank you Larry. I'll check to make sure the frame locks up good. I did know to look for pitting but a reminder never hurt anyone.
Thanks again Larry,
Shawn

Any thing to look for that would be bad? One thing I would check is the serial number. Easy open frames started in the 195000 range, give or take, and newer. Also the rimfire/centerfire switch on top of the hammer is prefered. If you can get the seller to give you the first 3 digits of the 6 digit serial we can determine when it was made. If only a 5 digit number I'd steer clear of it. Older frames work but can be a PITA, especially when buying additional barrels of newer manufacture at a later date. If the barrels have front sights that are screwed on they are new generation, if soldered on you have old stuff. Check each barrel on the frame to make sure that they all "lock up" and cock and fire. Don't be embarrased by the Tasco, if it is a 1.25-4x model it will do you well. I have them on a 45/70 with a few hundred rounds and a 357 max with a few thousand. Surprisingly good glass and generous FOV. And, well, good luck.
Rod, too.

The numbers were in the 400xxxs and frame locked good. Unfortunately there was pitting on most frame surfaces. I passed on the deal. Was hard to do after driving 1.5 hours. Thanks for all the info, I'll keep looking.

That's too bad. If the outer surfaces were that bad on a newer gun like that it shows lack of care, and I'd be concerned about the bore(s) as well. Better luck next time.
Rod, too.

Yes the bores were so dirty I could not see if there was pitting. I was not prepared to clean them. I wish he would have described the condition honestly. Would have saved both of us a trip.

I agree it's too bad the deal turned out to be a lemon. But look at it this way, the drive up could have saved you a lot of headache. If it was done by mail at a greater distance you would have the lemon and he would have your gun. He might not be willing to take it back. It could turn into a real problem fast.

Good job on spotting the pitting and checking the barrel's. You could have gotten a real lemon.
