try some of the faster powders, like aa2015, rl-7, and imr4198.
the 87gr v-max has a balistic coeff. of .400, and is what i'm trying in mine every chance i get.
about 1 1/2" at 100 is what i've got with 44.0gr of imr4350. i'm now convinced i can do better with those powders previosly mentioned. all the while getting less recoil/muzzle blast.
scope.......get a 3x12 burris and set on top that thing! base......i have a virgin valley weaver type on my .243, with 3 burris signature zee rings holding the scope. this is by far my mostest... ... favorite base/ring/scope setup so far. it ain't cheap, but it's good!
a standard weaver base will work fine, and would save a few bucks, but the vvcg model is.... solid steel.....stout....and really good lookin, imo.
my other encore(7-08, and 6br) have burris dual dovetail bases, with 2 signature rings.
i also like the 3 ring redfield mount/2x7 burris scope really well on my 30-30AI.
heck, i guess i'm easy to please. plus, i havn't had any trouble with any of these yet.

Scott, I've been using 58gr Vmax and Varget powder in my 243 with great results. Accuracy is .75 easily and definitely go enough for killing chucks. Never chrongraphed it. Afraid to shoot the Chrony. Next year I'm switching over to 70 NBT or 75 gr Vmax, just for something different. Right now the 243 is too boring to shoot.
