after only taking predators and varmints with my handguns I finally knocked down a deer yesterday. I've had some miserable experiences with my handgunning for deer from misses to one lost buck. I'm only allowed one deer here in Oregon but I had a hair tag and I decided I needed to get my confidence back so if I saw a doe I would take it which is exactly what happened. I took a blacktail doe at 125yds with my 7-30 contender. I put the first shot right behind the shoulder and the deer buckled but she got her feet back under her so I sent another one her way and put her down. The two shots were within 1.5 inches of eachother. I definitely needed that to get my confidence in my shooting back up.

Congratulations, wapitirod,on your first handgun deer. That's got to be a great confidence builder. To bad you can only take one deer a year. By the way, thanks for the 475 linebaugh load information...KRal

Congrats Rod. There is nothing quite like taking a Deer with a Single Shot Handgun, well to me anyways.

thanks guys, it's been a while coming. I know my guns and ballistics but when you get bit like I did it's hard to regain the confidence which is why the last few years I started out with intending on killing my deer with a handgun and always grabbed for the rifle during crunch time but I can honestly say the rifle will be staying home for now on. I think it was a little harder for me because we don't have the # of deer you guys back east have and we have a one deer a year limit and with me being a meat hunter I never wanted to chance missing the opportunity to fill my tag. Thanks again for the congratulations and encouraging words.
