Dad got a new Rock Island 1911 this weekend. I must say this is a well built piece even being from the Phillipines. Heard a lot of good from these guns. We decided to see what she was made of. Fired it up today and all was good, still a little tight. Not one problem firing. She is a plain jane GI 1911 parkerized with wood grips. For the price of 375 free shipping + 20 to FFL, this 1911 is well worth the money.

Got it from Bellshire on Gunbroker, 375 with free shipping!! Centerfire Systems has the same one I got for 350 but I think you have to pay shipping. Still for this 1911, you cannot beat it. I am getting ready to get me one too!

You might want to consider ponying up the extra $50 and get the tactical Rock. It has all the bells and whistles that you usually add on but at a whole lot less $$$.
Rod, too.

I thought about getting the tactical but I am not much of a lefty. The only thing I would adjust on the standard is the slide stop. It takes a little more effort to reach up with your thumb but it is not really that bad.

The sights on the GI leave a little to be desired, with the tactical you get Novak rear and a dovetailed front. This allows for a lot of aftermarket options, including fiber optic or tritium. I agree the ambi safety is a waste. Also the "commander style" hammer and extended beavertail eliminate any chance of pinching. I am leaning toward the Match model as it has a fiber optic front and fully adjustable rear, albeit another hundred bucks more. Just depends on what you want to do with it.
Rod, too.
