I am thinking about getting a 375 Winchester for my Contender.

What is the best length for this caliber I was thinking 14" but might consider 12"

It has a good size bore so a 14" should be pretty light.

What about scopes I was thinking 2X (I have one) but might consider 4X

If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

Hey there H20Bug,

I just topped off my new 375 Win with a old 1.5 x 4 Burris and an older 3 ring Redfield base I had in my project box. I just got back mine from getting a brake installed. I paid $50.00 for the barrel (with a box of ammo), $70.00 (incl. S&H) for the brake and a friend is holding onto a set of RCBS dies for me at $25.00. The barrel had been cut to 13" but is about 15" with the brake installed. It looks real nice with the stainless brake and blue barrel...but will it shoot?? I'll let you know tomorrow cause I'm taking it to the range.

If it hold two inches @ 100yds then I'll be taking it elk hunting as I'm holding an Cow Elk tag for a unit about 20 miles from my house.

It seems like I saw one for sale on Ed's Contenders a week or so ago. Here ya go: http://www.edstc.com

I just got back from the first time at the range with my .375 Win. I was impressed. I haven't started reloading for it yet. It came with a box of Win 200Gr. factory so I gave that a whirl. After getting it sighted in with the new scope I set it to print 3" high at 100 yards. Right off the bat I got a nice 1 1/4" group! Mine has a brake so the recoil is very low, like a heavy 357 Mag. At 200 it dropped 8" but still held about a 2" group. I'll be taking it elk hunting in two weeks.

Looks like you got a shooter, enjoy your hunt and remember PICS!

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

H20Bug,
The .375 Win. is a nice cartridge. However, brass and ammo can be difficult to find on occasion. Either a 12" or 14" barrel will work, although I would recommend the 14" for a bit more velocity.
I also believe you should consider the .375 JDJ. I've had a 12 1/2" barrel for nearly 20 years that I've used all over the world, and a 15" Encore barrel that has received much less use. With 220 gr. bullets, the .375 JDJ recoil is not bad even with stout loads, and it can certainly be loaded down just a bit to .375 Win . levels. This way, you would still have the option of using 270 or 300 gr. loads, should you ever desire to hunt truly big game. The .444 Marlin brass is readily available from all discounters, and the cartridge is simple to load for.
With the .375 JDJ, I would probably encourage a new buyer to buy the 14" ported version.
For my use, I think a 4X Leupold is ideal on the JDJ, and feel the same about the .375 Win.

OK here is where I get confused

375 JDJ vs 375 Win

I do not see a huge gap in vel on 200 & 220 gr bullets

Now the JDJ will do the larger bullets but I am looking at 225 max

Now I can buy brass for both (about same $) but dies for the JDJ are more. Factory loads for the 375 win not so bad the JDJ are out of the box about $5 each

Now I do handload so I can close the gap but I just do not see a huge advantage in going with the JDJ

?????

I'm glad to hear you guys talk about the 375 JDJ v/s the 375 Win. I want to keep the 375 JDJ as an option for when I get tired of the 375 Win, but I'm in no hurry.

I had no plans of getting my 375 Win until I saw it posted on Craigs List for $50.00. I figured "what have I got to loose?" As it turns out I had nothing to loose and everything to gain!

The 375 Win is a 200 yard gun, MAX. Out here in the west that is a liablity. In most of the east it wouldn't be an issue. With factory rounds (200 gr.) mine is getting less then 1.25" groups @ 100 yards and 2" at 200. I'm OK with that. OK, so it drops 8" @ 200 when sighted in 3" high at 100...as long as I know that I can deal with it. It will still put a .375 hole in where ever or whatever it hits.

I'm partial to the 375 Win, in the encore it does not give up much to the 375 JDJ.

Midsouth ran a screaming sale 2-3 years ago and I got a 15" SS 375 JDJ for $150.00. Way to hard to pass up. Oiled it up and put it in the back of the safe. I might shoot it someday. LOL

don't always believe what you read, when I had my last 375JDJ barrel I was getting between 2300 and 2400fps with 220 and 225gr bullets and since I've got my new barrel I'm only shooting 260gr Accubonds and I'm getting 2100fps and I'm only using published data, the JDJ is quite a bit more powerfull than the winchester and with the bc of the heavier bullets it shoots flatter than the winchester with lighter bullets so it depends on what you want the cartridge to do.

I won't be wronged. I won't be insulted. I won't be laid a-hand on. I don't do these things to other people, and I require the same from them. John Wayne-The Shootist

If all you want is a deer gun...200's, 220's... the .375 Win. is a good cartridge, as I said. The JDJ can run a bit faster, but its not necessary for game that size. If you ever want to hunt truly big game, there's no comparison at all. I made my choice many years ago, and it was the correct one for me. Thus, my suggestion was made for your consideration.
