Was on the road for work this week...made the mistake of visiting a Cabela's that was just down the road from my hotel. Spent some time nosing in the bargain cave, found a nice pair of Columbia hiking boots...$100 marked down to $38...they came home w/ me! Also saw two pairs of Meindl hunting boots...I have a pair and LOVE them! But these were one size too big...if you wear a size 13, call the Hamburg store and buy them...regular $250 marked down to $130.

Anyhoo...after that I strolled through the gun section of the store and eventually ended up at the used handgun racks. On the bottom shelf was a XP-100 7BR, rechambered to 7mm/.308...blah...atop the barrel was a set of basic silhouette sights...double blah!!! But she was wrapped in the sweet caresses of a HS Precision Silhouette Style stock!! All of a sudden I was getting a little hot and bothered!!

After standing at the counter waiting for 40 minutes to get served, I did a quick look-over...noted it was missing the safety, questioned the authenticity of the chambering being a "true" 7mm/.308 since it was obviously a retired sillywet gun, and noted a few areas around action port where it had been machined. He knocked off a little on the price...and I whipped out ol'Miss'Visa!! The grand total hit me for $530...not bad considering it's wearing a $350 stock!!

So...now...what do I convert it to?? Thinking about a McGowan, 16-17", .750" muzzle, recessed crown, SS tube. Maybe just a basic 6BR?? I'm taking any and all ideas other than .22 cal's.

BTW...the gun sales counter was INSANE. Everyone that stepped up was buying a gun!! Wonder why that was?

I'm surprised they would even sell it with no safety. The liability police must have been asleep at the switch.

great buy!
A 6mm BR or a 6mm-6.5x47 Lapua would also be another good one.

When you step in poop does it always smell like pink roses? How do you do that?

Just kidding! I guess I'm jealous! We all need our projects for the cool, rainy weather when we can't get out to the range or woods. Good luck! How 'bout 243 AI?

Some of the aftermarket stocks sometimes don't allow for a safety or have a spot for a safety that requires a modification. example a gentry bolt safety

You have no idea how often that happens....won't even tell you what I bought last week!! OK...I will...a BIG Craftsman cordless tool kit (new), Hobart meat slicer and a compound miter saw (barely used)...for $150 cash.

Just got back from running errands and bumped into my 'smith at a local gun shop. Says he's got a mess of new Rem 700 take offs...including an unfired .300 Savage. That might be kinda fun!

Yes I do...you are in the right place at the right time it seems. Sounds like you will be able to do some more "honey do's" with all that and then cut your meat for a sandwich when you are done. HA! Hmmmm...300 Savage...that might be fun. What other barrels did he have?

We did not get to talk very long...I was heading to the courthouse to renew my concealed permit. I'm going to stop by on Monday and see what all he has. You lookin' for something??

The .300Sav...I think it'd be kinda cool...cut'er to 15", top w/ a 2.5-8X Weaver, lanch a 150gr NBT or SST, rather light to carry w/ the super light sillywet style stock and tapered barrel, likely be sub-MOA gun to 350-ish yds. Not to mention it would go nicely with the .250SAI.

I may even have dies...off to the mancave!! (read that w/ me in mind doing my best flying superman pose and wearing a red cape!!)

WOW a serious poke to the MINDS EYES!! LOL

300 Savage Rem take off. I don't think Rem chambered many rifles in 300 savage. I do remember the classic being chambered for it one year. That would be a great cartridge for the XP.

Yeah, maybe a 222 barrel if one is available. Always liked that cartridge. Not the biggest or fastest but unusually accurate. I don't know really. I still haven't put the finishing touches on the 270 and 243 barrels for one of the Strikers. I had to go back and remount the 270 barrel and check the headspace again. The first go around didn't work out too good and had some issues with some used brass. I am going to try out new brass loads and go from there and use a box of factory stuff for reference. Then on to the 243 which is what I really wanted in the first place. The 270 barrel was just an add on to the deal, so I tho't it would be fun to try. I cut and crowned the barrels myself at a buddies shop. That was fun.

Superman...red cape???? Are you kidding me...I pictured you as a full-figured Spiderman type!! hahahahaha!!! Was a funny visual, though.

Well, if you go with the 300 Savage cartridge and you want it to match nicely with your 250 Savage AI, you need to add the "AI" to the 300 as well

It may feel like it is "unequally yoked" otherwise

Blue underoos!!

Dies...I did find a set of RCBS FL dies hiding in my cabinet. Also found a box of ammo!! It's ready to roll if he really does have the barrel...sometimes he's a little fuzzy on remembering his barrel inventory.
