Alright !!! I am going to order a ruger blackhawk in 45 long colt with a 4 3/8 barrel. What if any upgrades should I get first, and I need some good bear loads. I like it hot and messy. Any advice is alway's welcome. I plan on hunting black bear in Montana this spring.

The gun itself is plenty out of the box the only shortcoming is the trigger. you can install a set of wolff springs and if you use the 30oz trigger spring you'll end up with about a 2.5lb trigger pull, the heavier hammer spring (24lb if I remember) will reduce lock time but it's not as smooth as the 17 or 19lb springs and the extra power base pin latch spring will stop the base pin from jumping under heavy recoil which is a must for what your wanting to do. You can do lot's to that gun to make it shoot better if wish from a full blown action job, reaming the cylinder and installing a belt mountain oversized base pin, it just depends on what you want as a final result and how much you want to spend.

I like a 325 or 335 CPB over 23 grains of H110. Probably take anything on the continent.

You might also try 21.0grs of W296 over a 300gr Hornady XTP HP. It shoots extrmely well in my Bisley 5 1/2" and should take a black bear easily.IMO
It's not the gun, but the man behind it.

Might be too hot for your 4 5/8 but in my Bisley 7 1/2, I use a 250gr cast bullet over 9.3grs Unique..very very accurate at 100 yds..ElDee

I like 335 gr Cast Performance bullets in mine. Be sure to check the cylinder throat dimensions when you get it too. For some reason .45 Colt Blackhawks seem to be undersized from time to time. Good luck and enjoy the new gun!

Hornady 250 XTP w it 20.5 Gr of 2400 or Sierra 300 gr sp with 20.0 gr 2400
Both are thumpers
If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

You might want to check the throats in the cylinder. Ruger is known for inconsistancy on the 45 Colt, usually running on the small side that hampers accuracy. Cas will hand ream them and his turn around time is rather quick. Here is a link to his web site. Cylindersmith 10% from all .45 throating work goes to the Martin Family Trust, he was a fireman that lost his life in the 911 attacks.

Here is a good explanation from cylindersmith. There are a few reasons to ream a cylinder throat. The most obvious reason is to correct an undersized throat diameter. Some manufacturers regularly produce their revolvers with cylinder throats that are smaller than the bore diameter. The problem with this is not only does it increase chamber pressure, but it isn't conducive to accuracy. When a bullet passes through the undersized cylinder throat, it is swaged down to the smaller size. The bullet is now undersized for the revolvers bore, leading to decreased accuracy and increased leading with cast bullets. As well, some heavy bullets and LBT style bullets will not chamber in a cylinder with tight throats. This is quite common with LFN and WFN profile cast bullets. This was the very reason I started to do this work in the first place. My own guns wouldn't chamber 300gr WFN bullets.
Many shooter want to be sure that their cylinder throats are uniform, and like knowing that things are "right". Uniformity plays a large role in a revolvers ability to group. Persistent flyers can often be traced to one or two throats in particular that vary from the rest.
While we do not make any claims or guarantees of improved accuracy, it's generally the case. Like most things, some guns will greatly benefit from this work with major improvements, while with others it will not be as noticeable. I will say that in the several years that I've been doing this work, in terms of accuracy most guns benefited to some degree. Some did not. NONE have gotten worse.

I once used a cast 280gr SWCGC over 23.0grs of H-110 in my 4 5/8" Blackhawk in .45 Colt to take a very large boar at close range. The first shot clipped his spine and dropped his back legs. It just got dark and he dragged himself into the thickets and when I caught up to him I put one more through the shoulder that rolled him over. All I found was one gas check when I opened him up. Good load for a good gun for big animals....
