Well big game is over for the year and I'm going to concentrate on those wrascly wabbits. I have a TC Contender 10" in 30/30. I was wondering if anyone had some light pistol powder, shotgun powder loads with 100 gr. plinkers or the 110 Speer HP? I have been skulking by the local canals with my 1892 Win 32-20, 115 gr FP over 4 grs of Universal. It shoots about 1200 fps. I'm looking for that kind of performance. Nothing too destructive for those Cottontails

Thanks,

Mike

Mike...take those lightweight 100/110gr bullets and seat them over 10gr of Unique and light it with any primer of your choosing. This will turn the 30-30 Winny into an awesome wabbit wacker!

BTW...your 32-20 load is about identical to mine...W231 and 115gr Penn FN bullets. A good friend wanted to take my 10" 32-20 to CO for Mt. Lions...sent him out with this load and he bagged a very nice 120# female. One hit to the shoulder completetly penetrated the cat...it jumped, ran about 70yds and stopped, he hit her again in the chest. The cat was dead on its feet after the first shot but the second just kept her from going any further.

Well I tried the 10 gr. of Unique with the 110 Gr. Speer Varmiter. It cut a clover leaf at 50 yds. Very easy kicking round. I hope to try some out tonight on Bugs!

Thanks

Mike

Thank you Dan. B. That 10 gr Unique loads shoots real well. I had a hour to poke along the desert canals today and this little guy gave me about a 45 yd shot. Heart lunged him. I'm very happy with the 110 gr. Speer Hollowpoint, shoots small groups and kills bunnies very well.

Would 10 grains of unique and a 113 lee soupcan work in a 30 herrett? I have a 10" and would like to take it wabbit and squirrel hunting. Or would I have to back off a bit because it's a smaller capacity than the 30/30?

Lanyard...AWESOME!!!

Herrettdude...I've never tried the Unique loading in the .30 Herrett. It is such a light load in any other .30 caliber that it would still work in the Herrett w/ reduced capacity. If it were any other time of year, I'd throw some together and shoot them off the porch and give a report...but I'm in the middle of deer season.

I wonder if a 7-08 could be loaded down enough for some of the small game applications??? Anyone tried it?

I shot a squirrel with a 55gr FMJ out of my 223. At 75 yards it looked and dressed like I had shot it with a 22 LR.

223 at 75 yards

22LR at 50 and 125 yards

Hey TC...what does this have to do w/ light loaded .308's?? Hmm...have to start calling you the post hound!!

Hey Pope...I'd have to say that if would likely be fine in a 7mm-08. Try the 100gr Hornady HP's if you have any. After season I may try it...I have a sweet lil'Model 7 in 7-08 for my daughter that she's itching to shoot...and she's only 5yo.

Dan… I was referring to the question posted above. I was suggesting that my FMJ’s out of my 223 tour up less meat than my 22LR. Try that in a 7mm08!?! I thought it was VERY pertinent. After all, my understanding is that the end result is an non mangled critter in hand.

Regarding the FMJ though...be careful...they are not legal in some areas.

My friend, you are not offending me in the slightest!!!!!! You have never shown the users of this forum anything but respect! Besides, as much as I have already taken on this forum, ha.

I have tendency to put my foot in my mouth. Between my dyslexia, dysgraphia, and ADD even my loving Wife laughs at my posts! In short, call me anything you want… but doom. Please don’t call me doom!!

Does this mean that Gary is going to change my aviator to Post Hound?

I use 147 gr pulled FMJ bullets and 5744 in my 30-30. Almost as cheap (at least they used to be!) as cast. I paid about 4 cents each for some pretty ugly FMJ with visible pull marks. I bought 2000. They were so dirty I had to leave them in the tumbler for 24 hours! They still give me 2" at 100 yds, plenty good enough for Jack Rabbits and or a coyote who happens by.

Bill...I too had good results from 5744 in 30-30 loads. Can't remember the charge weight though.

I'm glad this subject came up. I would have never considered hunting small game with my 7mm-08 pistol but now im thinkin its a pretty good idea. I cant wait to get some pistol powder and start loading. I favor the 120 grain sierra's for deer hunting so I might just stick with those (I have a bunch on hand). Do the HP bullets perform better for this type of application? I would imagine any bullet type would sufficiently handle rabbits/squirrels...?

I'd be more concerned w/ powder charge more so than bullet weight. The 10gr Unique loading works well with the 100/110gr .308" bullets. Going to a smaller more diameter w/ the 7mm will create more pressure. Then jumping to a heavier bullet will create even more pressure.

Keeping the 100gr bullet weight as the constant makes me feel a little more at ease experimenting with the 7mm bore and this loading. Once that is determined to be safe, then trying heavier bullets would be fine.

It wouldn’t really mater what load you shot it with as long as you hit it in the head.

Ok, I'll see if I can find some 100 grainers. Thanks for the info. I'm sure the 120's would be fine but your right I should probably stay closer to the recipe. Lookin forward to playin with it...

At least initially...then if it is determined to be safe, experiment like crazy! BUT...you have to keep us informed!!
