Hi Pab!,
If you get real interested I have a set of dies for the .338 IHMSA. It uses the 300 Savage case, blows out the taper and lengthens the neck slightly. It should beat the 338 Fed round by just a little. I may have an xp bbl in .338 that might work too.

I am wondering how the 338 Federal, which I believe is just a 338x308, stacks up to the 338 JDJ #2.

I don't have a .338 Federal, but have always believed that it and/ or the wildcat .338/08 would be the approximate performance equivalent of the .338 JDJ No. 2, just as the .308 Win. and .309 JDJ are virtual performance twins.

I was wondering how it would compare to the .338JDJ #2 also. I had a .338JDJ #2 barrel but sold it due to the brake on it. It really seemed to drop vleocities compared to what others were getting. If the .338 Federal is comparable to it, I think I'd be happy with it.
Bill, I can't find any data on the .338 IHMSA. Is that a Contender barrel? What velocities are you getting with it?

To run a .338 IHMSA or 8mm IHMSA at the velocities they are capable of, you would need an XP or Encore (or similar strength) action.
