Anybody hunting with a 4" redhawk?, just wondering how far you can accurately shoot it. I just got one and I'm using Garrett 330 gr ammo, I need to go out and practice with it to see what kind of distance I can shoot at game with it. I've always heard that you can shoot farther with longer barrels. Any experience would be appreciated, Thanks.

The distance you can realistically hunt with your Redhawk all depends on your experience and how well that gun will shoot. If you can put all your rounds consistently in a whitetail heart/lung size target at 75 yards but not at 100, 75 yards will be your limit. Having a longer barrel doesn't necessarily mean you can kill an animal at longer ranges. A longer barrel (at least longer than 4 inches) will give you higher velocities because more powder is able to be utilized because more is burnt while still in the tube. A longer barrel in most situations will provide you with more accuracy because the bullet will have more time to be stabilized before it exits the bore. A Ruger Redhawk with a 4" barrel isn't what I would consider a long range hunting tool. The only way you will know how far you can realistically kill an animal with it, is by going to the range and practicing with your revolver. Good luck.

I have one --I would say 50 yds is max with the small sight radius. Mine shoots good but--- compared to my 8 3/8 29 it is no match. 1.5-2" with the 29 @ 50 and 5-6" with the SRH You loose a lot with the sight radius.

Tree stand bow range it will be great otherwise you may want to try something else.

If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

I have one and have been very impressed with it. Using a 255 gr Cast Performance load originally worked up for my SBH, it will group around 3" at 75 yards. I have not shot it beyond that distance yet.

50 yards is about my limit for deer with a short sight radius.

Thanks for all your 2 cents worth guys, I really appreciate it. I guess it's out to the range for practice. I'll let you know how it goes.

BJ...I have shot my 4" S&W Mountain Gun w/ iron sights and would say for me that 60-70 yards is the max with 240 grain Hornady XTP's

Thats pretty good! I've just always heard that short barrels dont have the necessary sight plane to make longer shots, but I guess it just takes lots of practice. I'm comfortable around 30-40 yards right now, but hope to soon expand that range for when needed. I've had to pass on several deer that I felt were too far to shoot with my gun and my ability. Thanks for the inspiration Revolverlution!
