I was wondering what you all might think about trying to organize some sort of hog hunt down south to benefit not only the land owner but a worthy charity as well. Here in Michigan we have the annual traditional bowhunters bunny hunt that benefits St. Judes Children Hospital. Not only is it a great time but we usually come up with about $1000 between 50 guys for St. Judes. It is also a good time to introduce the youngsters to hunting. Just fishing for some thoughts here...

I agree with Shawn, novel idea. My daughter is of the hunting age also.

I like the St. Judes idea. Any help that can be given to a research hospital is great. The developments in just the last 20 years are the only reason I'm stil here.

Anytime we get new people into the sport (especially youngsters) and we are helping a good cause, it is alsways a geat idea IMO.
Keep the good thoughts going.

So now the next question is how do we put something together like this? I have never done anything like it before. Are there some members here who possibly have land to have the event on? Do we create a sort of roll-call thread for sign-ups? If anyone has had some experience in the area of organizing events chime in; your experience would be appreciated. What state would be a good central location to the majority of members...any suggestions? What state has seasons for hogs in the winter months? Lets see if we can't get this thing rolling for next year maybe...

I'd be more interested in deer/hog combo...many like hunting hogs, but I don't eat'em. So iffin deer were offered in the mix...no trophy bucks needed for me...just a doe permit would keep me entertained.

This sounds very similar to the Handgun Hunt for the Hungry. Your biggest challenge, to me, is going to be finding a host sight. It might even be advantageous to contact the Game Wardens and see what they know. They might just have a problem “public hunting” area that they would be willing to close off just for handgunners the hunt. They do it for youth hunts and this was for a good cause you might have a chance.

The reason I bring up calling the Game Wardens is because they have access to land that most don’t. They might even be able to put you in contact with a land owner that would welcome the publicity and pig removal.

Deer might be a problem as it seems that most like to leave their deer alone but I will make some contacts and see what I can do...management does could be a real possibility.

TCMan, do you have any suggestions on a possible place or suggestion on a state seeing as though you are down there? Maybe know some of those game wardens? If anyone else would like to volunteer to help me out that would be cool...thanks guys keep the ideas coming...

That is a great idea! I'm too new on the job to be getting any time off right now. If this turns into an annual event, I would be very interested in the next year or two.

From my past experiences it would be in your best interests to call the head of the Game Wardens. They should be able to help you or at least give you some direction. Do your home work and call them. If there is a problem area that would befit from a non profit organization helping the hungry and the environment all at the same time they might be willing to help. Like I stated in the previous post, they have all sorts of special hunts on the public hunting land. At least you don’t have anything to loose. They might just put you in contact with a ranch that would benefit from help as well.

Also, if you went threw the Game Wardens you wouldn’t have to worry about the laws as much. They are not going to tell you anything that you wouldn’t be able to do.

I'd be happy to join, if schedules work. I can always take a few days off a business trip. Bringing meat home is cumbersome for me, since I have to go back home to Stockholm with it. So giving it to charity is just fine. And hog hunting with my .44 is just great...
