My name is Chuck McBride and am new to handgunning. I've been reading your posts and am enjoying all the information. I recently inherited a H&R 949 from my dad. The serial number is worn on the butt strap. I can make out the letter "A" only. Any ideas on how to raise the serial number? Is this the only location for the sn?

Welcome to HHM fyrmanchaz48!!

I don't know much about the H&R's. Here is a link to some info on the them.

H&R INFO

I also found a referance in the American Rifleman dope bag section, H&R Model 949 Revolver May-95 page 60. I don't think I have that issue, I lost some when we moved.

Could you do a pencil rubbing and lift the serial number? Like in an old grave yard when you take paper and pencil and rub across the engraving to see the writing better.

DARE I SAY THIS!!!!You can contact your local BATF they have the means or local law enforcement may have the means to raise the numbers. Where the numbers are stamped the metal has been basically harden by the indentation process of stamping them.

Tigger - There's not enough lettering to try the pencil.

Diego - I read on another website about the ATF. I sent an e-mail to them asking for information.

I'm going to try some other ideas that I found on the net. 5% citric acid & water w/ heat from oxy/acet torch. If that doesn't work, murine eye wash and a black light.

If I'm unable to read it I'll just keep it for sentimental reasons, thanks for the help.
